Chance Me

I’m aware that I may get few responses (I know there are a lot of these threads) but UMich LSA is my dream college and it pretty much keeps me up each night wondering if I’m even qualified. I plan to apply Early Action. I’m from Los Angeles, California. I plan to keep my application centered around my necessity to create by using anecdotes from my extracurriculars and community service experience with perhaps mentioning how growing up in Los Angeles has influenced me to be a constant creator. I also plan to tie that into the constant creative solutions and innovation that a career in science will demand. I’m also from a very well ranked high school and very well ranked school district.

Prospective Major - Biology (minor in Biophysics)
GPA UW - 3.9847, W - 4.205.
ACT - 33, Essay: 10 (English - 36, Math - 27, Reading - 36, Science - 33)
AP Test - AP Language (5)
Extracurriculars - Yearbook Staff (2 years), Yearbook Head Editor of Photography (1 year), Theatre Department (4 years), Advanced Theatre (3 years), Fellowship of Christian Athletes (4 years, 3-year board member of Historian/Social Media Coordinator), Board of Chemistry Club (1 year, possibly next school year also)
Community Service - Historian & Head of Social Media for a homeless volunteer program chapter that I helped start that does service projects across the state but also networks with local politicians to seek better conditions for/more awareness for the current state of the homeless. I’ve also helped with a friend’s Relay for Life team for 3 years but I don’t think that’s very important.
Honors - Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award (will possibly receive Silver in fall/winter). Excellence in English/Language Arts and World Language Awards from my school.
Recommendations - Great recommendations from my counselor, California Science Teacher of the Year Biology teacher and Physics teacher, all of whom I have strong personal relationships with.
Next year’s classes - AP Spanish 4, AP Physics, AP Calculus AB, AP Government/Economics, Advanced Theatre, Yearbook.

Thank you in advance to anyone who helps me! I am very grateful!

I think you are competitive but being OOS is always a challenge even for the best student. The thing that sticks out loudly to me is the 27 in Math. By your grades I assume you are doing well in Math. If any chance to retake it and move it into the 30’s would be beneficial. I like the relay for life thing since you did it for 3 years. Schools like consistency. Yearbook and theater for 3-4 years is great and you have a leadership role also. Nice!

Don’t repeat your application but like the constant creator part. Work on that and own it. Make it personal and unique and “interesting”. Do a rough draft and see how it sounds to you.

Looks competitive but Ann Arbor is tough to get in for out of state. Good luck to you, but if they had to choose one, I hope they choose me.

i am also OOS Californian and I got in with 31 ACT and a GPA very similar to yours. I was top 7% of my class, but the valedictorian at my school did not get in and I did. When comparing you to myself I would say your chances are good. I also only had one AP test score at the time I applied, it was for bio and I also noted my bio interest on the application. Hopefully your dreams come true, I’m just here to let you know that it definitely is possible with your current stats.
