Hello! I am Currently a high school senior in Vermont and I really would appreciate an estimate on the chances of admission for NCSTATE Right now I have a 3.54(UW) and 3.88(W), the reason it is so low is because I struggled my freshman year to stay focused and as a result only got a 3.01 GPA for that year(However I have gotten 3.9’s for Sophomore and Junior year). My SAT score is currently a 1300 (640 RW 660M) I plan to go into computer engineering and I have very strong letters of recommendation and a really good essay.

I hope you are doing well. I am currently a High School Senior in Wake County and actually live in Raleigh. I don’t exactly know what your chance is, but I am gonna guess here. Based on the program you applied to, Computer Science/Engineering I think you have a low-moderate shot. There is a couple of things you need to understand. North Carolina kids, especially WC (Wake County) kids love NC State. It is an extremely competitive county, and most of us get rejected from NC State. I know one person who applied to Comp Sci, and he has a 4.0 Weighed, with a 32 ACT. He does not have as many extras as you, but definitely has a few. It is important to note that he was DEFERRED for Early Action. Here’s where I base my decision on. You are in the top 1/3 of your class, this is a good look at most schools, but the tough part is how small your school is. This is an “okay look” for you. If you were in the top 5%, you would be in a much better spot, and I would have full confidence you would get in. You do have a strong list of AP’s, and language credits. Schools love language credits because they can use it as a diversity card. The other part about AP’s is you have challenged yourself. It is also important to note that you took AP Comp Sci, which shows your interest in the program you are looking at pursuing. The tough part is your GPA. I don’t obviously know your school statistics, but from viewing the classes you have taken, you have a weak GPA. Do not take offense to this, simply hear me out. The Engineering school is extremely competitive at NC State. I know many people from my school who applied with 4.3’s+. I think what is going to hurt your overall chances are your GPA, and test score. While your test score is good, I don’t know if it is NC State Engineering “good.” I believe that if you applied for a different program, such as Business Admin you would have a pretty decent shot, like 50%. Again, I don’t know what your chance is completely, I would say you have a 25%-30% chance to get in. I am currently waiting to hear from State as well, but for Sport Management. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you get in.
Thank you for the response! When I applied using the commonapp I put Chemistry as a second major option… do you know if they consider you for your second choice if they reject you from your first choice? if so is the sciences college easier to get into than the engineering?
@JTG425 Yes, they will automatically consider you for your second choice major if you do not get into your primary. Is it easier than Engineering? Yes, but not by much. It is also extremely competitive, with NC State being a STEM school. I would bet you have a 30%-35% for Chemistry, but again, this is all based on guesses and information I have collected. Let me know if you get in!
Honestly? Chances to get into NCSU as an out of state student are not great—regardless of your grades. If this is your dream school I hope that you get the chance to attend. However if you don’t get accepted RD remember that the transfer process at NCSU is a little more straightforward. GL–hope you get an acceptance letter!!
