Hello,
I am currently at a public high school in the US. I go to a public high school that is considered extremely competitive by McGill standards if that is of any importance. I currently have a 31 composite on the ACT with a score of 8 on the writing, I will be retaking it and most likely will be able to get a 32. My GPA is a little more complicated. I did pretty poorly in sophomore year but stepped it up in Junior year. I took primarily honors courses with a few APs.
Sophomore GPA: 2.56
Junior GPA: 3.63
(Predicted) Senior GPA: 3.7
What would my chances be for the Faculty of Arts at the University of Toronto? Any input is much appreciated. Thank you.
Sorry I mean to say 2.71 for Sophomore year GPA.
@Chris2002 Which program?
Faculty of Arts. I would like to pursue Political Science. @bouders
@chris2002 It’s Faculty of Arts and Science. There are several admission programs. Three of them - computer science, commerce and life science are harder to get into than the others. Your junior and senior grades are most important. They won’t look at freshman or sophomore grades. You should get in with your current GPA and ACT score.
Your English and math grades will be the most important for admission. Keep those at A- or above. B+ in those or other courses makes your chances much more iffy.
You will also need 2 SAT subject tests with scores of 600+ or 2 AP exams with scores of 3+.
U of T recommends that you get your application in by the end of October or earlier. It’s a rolling process and the earlier you submit the application, the better. The application deadline is January 16, but they start evaluating applications as soon as they roll in. Some programs get full before the deadline.
Thank you so much for responding! Would I be able to submit one SAT Subject test and one AP test? I took the French SAT and received a 720 (should I retake?) and I also took the AP US History exam. I was also wondering if UofT calculated electives into my overall GPA? Does UofT take class rigor into consideration? Finally, what do you think my chances would be for McGill?
My grades for Junior year should be:
Math: A-
English: B+/A- (Depending on one assignment)
Biology: A-
AP US: B+
French: A-
Are these grades OK?
Thank you @bouders
Yes, a combination of 1 SAT subject test and 1 AP test is OK as long as they are different subjects. A 720 is good. I wouldn’t retake. U of T will calculate all courses into your GPA. Rigor is not accounted for, unless it’s an AP or IB course. Those grades are just OK. If you can bring them up in your senior year, it would improve your chances.
I’m not a McGill expert. AFAIK, their GPA/ACT/SAT minima are somewhat higher than U of T. If you post on the McGill forum, there are some experts there.
Oh alright, thank you for all the answers. I didn’t include my electives for Junior year but I took Business Management and an economics class called “World of Money”. I received an A in both of those if that helps at all. @bouders
@Chris2002 Yes, those A’s will help.
