HI! I’d really like to know all of your opinions on if I can get into the colleges that I’m applying for.
The colleges I’m applying for are
U of West Florida
U of North Florida
Florida Atlantic University
Florida Gulf Coast University
I’m majoring in Music Education, and I am going to apply the Summer Term for all 4 colleges.
My GPA is a weak 3.2, and that is mainly because I have prioritized band over my schoolwork the entire time I have been in high school.
My SAT is currently 1210, and I hope to get up to 1300 in a month or so.
Extra-Curricular Activities- I am in my school’s Varsity Band and am ranked 3rd out of 21 members of my section, as well as the Varsity Jazz Band, where I am ranked 2nd out of my section. I am also joining the Austin Philharmonic this August and was in a community band last year. I have also received the highest rating on my state’s solo and ensemble contest every year.
In terms of class rigor, I haven’t taken any AP classes or anything of that style throughout high school, which I know is really bad. But, I am taking AP English 4 and AP Government/Economics next year.
About Me- I’m a male, who is white, Jewish, and am in the class of 2020, and will be a senior next year. I live in Texas, which I hope gives me an advantage due to all of the colleges I want to go to having less than 10% OOS students. The reason I want to only go to public Florida Universities is that I have the Florida Prepaid College Plan and because I can be close to all my relatives. If you feel that it would be worth applying to other Florida public universities also, please say! Any feedback on my chance at the schools listed above and schools you might want me to know about would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
A question: Is the 3.2 your weighted GPA as calculated by the state universities in Florida? You get a .5 bump for taking honors classes, for example. Regardless, I think you have a chance at the schools you mentioned, particularly for a summer admit. Every university needs students and they all can’t get the high flyers. Also, are you interested in pursuing music in college? Are there programs at the schools you selected for music? If that’s the case, then you might want to inquire about how that might work in your favor with admissions.
If you look at the SUS matrix (Google it), you can see what the typical admits look like for all the state universities in Florida. You are close for a couple of them.
Alternatively, you might consider a state college program that offers direct admission. For example, from the UCF website: “Select attendees of Valencia College, Seminole State College of Florida, Eastern Florida State College, College of Central Florida, Daytona State College, and Lake-Sumter State College who graduate with their A.A. or A.S. can be offered guaranteed admission into UCF via DirectConnect to UCF.”
The state colleges will take Florida College Prepaid. Perhaps you pick a state college near where your relatives are that has a direct connect affiliation?
Best of luck.
