Chance me!

I am a current junior. I have a 3.0 uw and a 1500 on the SAT.
I have a 4.0 in dual enrollment

My ECs are 2 years of varsity softball, Head of Design in a global stem journal, organized hackathons, some volunteer hours (nothing significant), Fbla

I’m applying for CS or Econ

I’m applying to csu Fullerton, csulb, cal poly pomona, ucr, ucd, ucsc, Chapman, san jose state, asu, pepperdine, syracuse

CSU’s and UC’s are test blind for 2022 admissions. Calculate your UC GPA’s and include your CC classes.

https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

UC Capped weighted GPA= CSU Capped weighted GPA.

A Capped weighted GPA below 4.0 will be tough for CS at SJSU, UCR, UCSC and UCD.

CSULB and CPP would be toss ups for CS but For Econ you would have a better chance.

My cc classes are on a different transcript. My hs doesn’t add them to my hs transcript. so would it be calculated together?

Yes, for the UC’s and CSU’s they are calculated into the GPA’s.

Also DE course grades for the UC’s are entered in once= 1 per semester and 1 extra honors point bonus.

For the CSU’s, you enter the DE grades twice with 2 honors points so in your case the Capped weighted UCGPA may not be the same as the Capped weighted CSU GPA.

My HS does semester grades but my CC does quarter grades

That complicates matters. How many quarter DE courses have you taken?

4 quarters

Not quite sure if there’s one for freshman admission, as I could never find one, but the stats here will be a help in showing you the selectivity of each program at each UC.

https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

As for the Cal States, some of these dashboards exist too, but they’re a bit harder to find and it depends on what.

I was able to find this for CPP, and it’s a couple years back, but it may be of help to show admit rates. As you can see, your decision of econ vs CS will change your chances immensely. Econ is a fairly easy department to get into at CPP but the CS program would be difficult.

https://www.cpp.edu/arar/campus-data/Admissions/Application-Counts-by-College-and-Major/Application-Counts-by-Major_Fall-2014-to-Fall-2017.pdf

I don’t really have the time to get all the numbers for the other schools, but I can tell you that SJ econ isn’t very difficult, while CS will be hard. Same goes for UCSC. UCR is easier on both fronts but CS is still significantly harder.

Tbh, for all of these schools, CS is going to be significantly harder to get into than econ. Econ starts becoming more heavily impacted at the top schools known for strong econ/business departments.

I would advise that while CS is not as big of a deal since they’re all hard to get into anyways and you’re going to obviously pick the best school, when you do a biz/econ degree, the alma mater and your connections matter much more than if you were a typical stem major.

@nikkimmm678: The transfer GPA’s cannot be applicable for Freshman applicants, since the UC’s use a weighted GPA for Freshman and not for Transfers.

In General, CS will probably the most competitive major in which to apply for all the UC’s and Cal states. Econ can be competitive at several of the UC’s and a few Cal states.

Here is the 2020 UC GPA capped weighted averages and their 25th-75th percentile ranges to see where you stand.

2020 UC capped weighted GPA averages along with 25th-75th percentile range:
UCB: 4.22 (4.13-4.30)
UCLA: 4.25 (4.18-4.31)
UCSD: 4.16 (4.04-4.28)
UCSB: 4.15 (4.03-4.27)
UCI: 4.11 (3.96-4.26)
UCD: 4.11 (3.97-4.25)
UCSC: 3.94 (3.71-4.16)
UCR: 3.88 (3.65-4.11)
UCM: 3.68 (3.40-3.96)

Since the Cal states and UC’s will be test blind next admission cycle also, GPA will have a huge impact.

What is your local Cal state? That is where you get priority as an applicant and could be considered a Safety school.

my local cal state is sjsu

Econ will probably a good option at SJSU. CS, even as a local probably a Reach school

Good info there since you have the quartile GPA ranges, but I did say in my post, “but the stats here will be a help in showing you the selectivity of each program at each UC”.

I did not state to follow that for GPA purposes, but to see admit rates(aka selectivity) per major. I am aware these will be different from freshman admission too, but it is a good snapshot.

I will concede that the link provides good selectivity information for the majors OP is considering.

You UC/CSU GPA is tough to dig out but, For CS with a CSU GPA in the mid 3s,
Fullerton probably
, csulb, probably not
cal poly pomona maybe,
ucr, probably not
ucd, probably not
ucsc,probably not
Chapman, probably not
san jose state probably not - though they consider alternate majors so, select carefully

asu, probably
pepperdine - probably not,

I’d add Chico Sac and UNR to your list as likely admits with solid CS programs.

Good luck

Thank you! what do you think for syracuse and urbana champaign? I’m planning on retaking the SAT I got a 1500 my first try I am hoping for around a 1550 next time I take it.

sorry, i don’t have a good sense about the selectivity of those schools.

I wouldn’t bother retaking the SAT - a 1500 is a great score and most schools aren’t considering it anyhow.

If I had to take a guess, I would say you may have more of a chance at Syracuse in Econ (arts and sciences) than UIUC. I agree that I don’t think 50 pts more on the SAT will make any difference.

Could you afford Syracuse?
