colleges:
Brown, Upenn, Vandy, UVA, Rice, Brandies, BC, H/P (for the hell of it), NYU, Univ of Rochester, NYU and nyu stern, u mich, swarthmore, jhu, lehigh, Emory, Tufts, Northwester...can u gimme some suggestions/knock off those that dont belong..b/c as u can see, my list is wayyy to long

again, those are just colleges with potential in my range, please add/knock off that list...you dont have to chance me at every one either, i wanna go to brown tho...badly

Well, I don't really have to tell you this, but that CR score is really killing your chances at a couple of these schools. Your rank is good, your courseload is tough, your other test scores are good, and your ECs are quite respectable (although I don't see leadership of clubs here. For this reason, I would play up your volunteer efforts and leadership in getting volunteer work done not just by you but by others).

Right now:

Brown--slight reach
Upenn--slight reach
Vandy--reach
UVA--match to slight reach
Rice--slight reach
Brandeis--match to slight reach
Boston College--match to slight reach
Harvard--it's Harvard--reach
Princeton--Reach
NYU (CALS)--safe match
NYU (Stern)--match
Univ of Rochester--safe match
Michigan--match
Swarthmore--slight reach
John Hopkins--slight reach
Lehigh--safe match
Emory--match
Tufts--slight reach
Northwestern--slight reach

Take Harvard, Princeton, and Vandy off your list. Use Lehigh as your safety/safe match.

Decide if you want to go for medicine, business, or engineering

If you want to go for business, apply to UVA, NYU (stern), Michigan, U Penn (you are a reach at Wharton), Boston College, Emory, and Lehigh

For pre-medicine, go to John Hopkins, U Penn, Brown, UVA, Michigan, Boston College, Emory, Tufts, Northwestern, Univ of Rochester, Swarthmore and Brandeis.

For engineering, apply to John Hopkins, U Penn, Rice, Brown, Northwestern, Swarthmore and Tufts.

i think the person above is actually being a bit generous. i would say swarthmore, brown, and UPenn are reaches as well.

BC and brandeis should be matches.

you have to deal with the fact that you're part of a pretty well represented minority at top colleges and you're also from new jersey...both are going to hurt you.

To improve your chances, retake the SAT I CR and do something about leadership in your clubs, academics, and volunteer activities. Do this now and as soon as the new school year starts up so that you can get it on your resume for these schools.

P.S. I think ek1099 is right about BC being a match, but I'll stick with my chances on the others.

ek1099 is right. The whole Ivy League and other top schools are always reaches. You could have perfect SATs and be rejected. You never can tell.

Well, yes and no.

Let's say that you know that Columbia's average SATs of admitted students are around 2100 (I think it's right around 2119), and that they admit people who average 3.88 UW GPA.

If you have a 2200 SAT, a 3.92 UW GPA--good ECs, good SAT II test scores, and great volunteer work and a good essay, then I'd have to say that this school is a match for you. It is true that there may be 1 out of 4 people with these stats who will get rejected, but to me that means that the ability to predict a likelihood is easy--it's each individual's chances that are hard to predict.

In other words I can't say which three will get in and which one person won't, but overall I can tell someone that they are a "match"--meaning that they have about a 60% chance or better of being admitted.

This is one thing I get all the time--I have some people come back to me and say that I told them they wouldn't get in--but they did--or they tell me that I said they would get in--but they didn't. Obviously if I give someone a 60% chance that means 2 out of 5 times I would be wrong. Considering that I've had only 3 people come back (out of 100s that I've done predictions for), I don't feel too bad. None of us are infallible--nor do we claim to be--and I have to expect the averages to work as I've explained them above.

Besides--the advice is free--so if you want better chances, sign up for the $89 special here on CC.

being asian and from such a well represented state as new jersey is going to make it harder for that person to get into the top schools than a person from, let's say, montana. this is solely for diversity reasons. i'm not saying bpatel890 is not as qualified as other applicants to these colleges. it's just that the top colleges usually aim for an extremely diverse class (in terms of ethnicity, where you're from, social class, etc), and i don't see any glaring 'hook' from him.

like the others have said, you should try to raise your CR score and get a leadership position at a few clubs. that should raise your chances significantly.

good luck with the application process! we could all be wrong in chancing you. honestly, i think a lot of it is based on luck.

wow, thanks guys, i will work on those two things, leadership and CR..but, many ppl may not know, but the work i do for BAPS, as the main coordinator of activites, is more of a leadership position than any i can get at a school club, but i dont know how much colleges will like that when i explain that to them...butt..thanks for the advice

definitely agree with ek1099. ORM+NJ is a disadvantage. The CR is killer. As of now, i predict reject at most ivies, maybe 1 if you're lucky. In at perhaps 40-50% of the other top schools you named.

With your current scores your list is way too top heavy and you could end up with little choice.
