I am a to-be junior in High School next year. I want to one day be a Neurosurgeon and have been looking towards the future. I want to attend a top university, with a good science department and pre-medical program. I hope this will in turn contribute to me getting into a top medical school. This is why I am considering Northwestern.

By application time, I should be at over a 4.0 and maybe even a 4.1.. unweighted probably a 3.8-3.9. I am very driven and will do whatever it takes to make myself successful. If you need any more info let me know!

Thats about it.. let me know what you guys think my chances are and what else I should do to improve my chances!

Also, I do not have any ACT/SAT scores yet, that will be coming this year.

One more question, by enrolling into the undergrad pre-med program at Northwestern, does it decrease/increase my chances into the med school at all?

you're looking good buddy. I don't think enrolling in the pre-med program will effect your chances of getting into the med school because I think all the doctors in the med school were at one time pre-meds.

My pediatritian works at the med school and I believe is Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics there. So I'll ask him your questions when I get my physical from him next week. :)

gpa looks low, how competitive is your school?

i know someone who did undergrad at northwestern and is now going to their med school, i don't know if they would acknowledge it but i'd believe it helps a little, i'm sure it doesn't hurt.

my reasoning would be:
future alumni donations (a double degree holder from the same school must be much more likely to donate)

course rigor (they know you were successful at northwestern undergrad, a school they're very familiar with, so they can very accurately gauge your chances at the medical school)

school pride (hey, it has to count for something)

likely yield (they know if you attended northwestern as an undergrad and liked it enough to apply to med school, you're likely to matriculate if accepted)

so i would reason that yes, it will help you be more competitive for northwestern med school than if you went to another top school.

if you can get your GPA up to a 3.9 and really knock out the SATs ACTs, consider beginning to do some work in hospitals and maybe apply for HPME

ok, I talked to a northwestern med student who is now going through his third year there and is going to stat his M.D./P.H.D. this fall. He said that if you do the pre-med program at northwestern and you continue to have a gpas of around 3.5, you'll almost be guarenteed to be admitted to northwestern's med school.

So, if you get in there.......work your butt off towards your goal!
