Chance me!

I'm applying to 5 schools RD, and Rochester used to be my top 2, but the weather is making me think twice, but when I visited, I loved the campus and the students, so I'm applying there anyway. It's one of my "safer" schools other than UCBoulder where I already got in, even though it's not a complete safety. Are my chances pretty good?, or should I put I put my deposit on UCB?

Impressive list of accomplishments.

You seem like a Rochester type of person to me. Inquisitive, outgoing, academic, with a balance of musical and other interests. And you have a solid background in high school math, which helps in many majors at Rochester from Psychology to Political Science to Economics (and Physics, Chemistry, etc.), but not including linguistic ones like English or other languages or Philosophy type majors.

Your list of musical experiences meshes well with the various musical influences at UR. There's the Eastman school and the various drama and musical performing clubs on campus.

Most people who visit the campus, as you did, begin to appreciate Rochester's extraordinary liberal arts and university communities.

I wonder if UR requires SAT scores? And I wonder what major you are interested in, or are there particular departments that you're most focused on? Are you also interested in graduate school, or do you have a particular profession in mind?

Yes, Rochester's unique style definitely appeals to me, and it's the smallest school I'm applying to BY FAR, which is also appealing considering I go to a very small High School. I love how easy it is (or at least how easy they made it sound) to double major. I don't have a specific profession in mind. Premed is a possibility, but I'm not sure if I can survive, or afford for that matter, all that schooling! If I had to pick a double major right now, it would probably be physics and psychology, but I'm really undecided. I also really like the computer and doing graphic design and such, so that's always a possibility. AND, theater has always been a big part of my life so I want to continue that in some way also! What I really need is a school that has a bit of everything!

Luckily, Rochester does not require the SAT I. It's an option of SAT I OR ACT w/ writing. Thank goodness. I did miserably on the PSAT's, but I did well on the SAT II's and I knew I had to send those in, and I didn't want to risk doing badly on the SAT I's and having colleges see those scores!

Thanks for responding in depth!

Yeah I say its a strong match. Rochester's winters aren't that bad, just tedious. They do a great job of cleaning walkways and stairs so everything is accessible.

Physics/Physc is an interesting combo. I have a friend whose Comp Sci and Psych, double majoring is real easy here.

If you have any specific questions feel free to send me an PM. Im a sophomore at Rochester currently in the process of creating my own major and double majoring in Creative Writing.

Thanks insanemembrane! I'll keep you in mind considering no one from my school has gone there! If I get in, i'm sure i'll have more questions!

The weather issue is a tough one. I came to visit in September (the jewish holiday weekend), and the weather was gorgeous!!! But they were saying then that it was unbelievably rare. I love the snow, and I don't mind the cold, but I'm not sure if I can deal with days and weeks without sun!

I do have a question for you actually. Since they use the common app, they'll see that I've applied to Cornell and GW, which I guess are a bit more competitive (Cornell more than GW obviously). Will that hurt my chances???

Not at all, Rochester shares applicants with lots of other competitive top schools. Due to its proximity to Cornell, that won't hurt you.

However Rochester does pay close attention to how interested students are in applying, so your visit to Rochester and any other contact through recruitment programs is noted and is usually a plus.

As for weeks without the sun, thats kinda exaggerated, its more like early sunsets which kinda get annoying. It'll be 5pm and dark outside. But the campus is ridiculously well lighted, so its never a problem.

Cool. I did have an interview there when I visited, which I thought went quite well. And that's good to know that the sun does exist in Rochester :). THANKS!

arain, i'm a freshman at UR and i was just in the fall ITP play, 365 days/plays and i also take voice lessons at eastman, and i'm in chamber singers. so if you have any questions about the theatre/music program, feel free to pm me :)

You have a good shot. I know several people who have gotten in with similar stats as you.
And the weather is not too bad here. A little gray but there's plenty of sunshine.
