I don't mean to snap, but demanding replies to a chance thread riddled with spelling errors, obscene caps, and poor formatting is not a favorable demonstration of your intelligence.

Unless you are a very poor URM, you have very little chance.

lol @ aminhamenina
but she's right, ur sat score doesn't cut it, ec's are mehh, not many ap's so probably not a very rigorous course load - i would say very low chance to none

Just a quick word of advice, the Youth Leadership Conference is a fat scam. It means nothing on your application and the adcom committee knows it.
Take a Math SAT2

"but she's right, ur sat score doesn't cut it, ec's are mehh, not many ap's so probably not a very rigorous course load - i would say very low chance to none"

...uh, Vishnu, aren't you in the Science Honors Program? Meaning, you're still in high school? I'm not trying to play the ivory tower card, but I think it's a bit rich of you to comment on a potential peer's stats when you're both in the same boat.

k, i'm srry for being so hard on u, but u might have a chance
i am comparing you to ppl in my school, who are like gods
i go to a blue ribbon school in NJ and we graduated over 25 ppl/400 into ivies last year (pretty impressive). At our school, those stats don't cut it, but maybe in your school. so good luck

I think you should refrain from further posting "Chance Me" threads because, one day, you could end up like me - having not applied to my dream school because too many people on this site (90% of whom, I'm sure, were in my high school graduating class and only shooting down my hopes to bolster their own egos and credentials) told me that I didn't "have a snowball's chance".

Threads like this could potentially wreck any trace of self-esteem that you may have, as well as deter you from doing what you really want to do.

That being said, apply and don't give a rat's ass about what these people say.

"I think you should refrain from further posting "Chance Me" threads because, one day, you could end up like me - having not applied to my dream school because too many people on this site (90% of whom, I'm sure, were in my high school graduating class and only shooting down my hopes to bolster their own egos and credentials) told me that I didn't "have a snowball's chance"."

I think you should refrain from giving bad advice on this forum, chance me threads give a sense of perspective on what it takes to get into colleges. applicants on here are down-right delusional half the time, this is far worse than any damage to self-esteem a realistic critique gives. If applicants have put themselves up on a pedestal (or are not shooting high enough) it's better that they gain some perspective here rather than go into the admissions process blind. Even if they are shooting in the right direction many don't know what factors could swing their application and what they should / should not focus on for admissions.

Many of us on here are current columbia students (I am) and alumni. We clearly have no reason to inflate or deflate people's chances. It's up to readers to judge whose advice they deem valuable and realistic. Moreover, as far as I can see people on these forums are a little optimistic, wanting people to apply even when they're chances are very slim. If your self esteem can't handle a little realty and criticism, you probably shouldn't be applying to top schools in the first place.

You're a current Columbia student - congratulations.

Do I think that fact gives anything you say about someone's chances at acceptance more credibility? Nah. You're just a regular guy, and maybe you do have a better idea of what it takes to get in; however, someone like "aminhamenina" who plays the "I gotz g00d internetz grammer" card on an innocent person looking for advice is someone that, I for one probably wouldn't have listened to, but who am I to say that for anyone else, especially now that I am out of the application process.

It's whatev really, you're probably right anyway.

"Do I think that fact gives anything you say about someone's chances at acceptance more credibility? Nah"

Firstly, and most importantly, it means that I probably have no vested interest in inflating or deflating chances. It also means that I am actually around the sort of student that gets in (who would have thought), I would have discussed what other people did to get in. I would have observed the process for longer. I'm no admissions officer and never pretend to be, but collectively many people offering chance posts and explaining those posts gives an applicant (and others readers) a better idea of what it takes and who usually gets in.

"someone that, I for one probably wouldn't have listened to"

whoever asked you to blindly follow anyone on an internet forum? a few bad apples don't warrant not going to market.

to add to Cc's point, none of us can predict the future, and none of us, past or present CU students, can tell you for sure whether or not you'll get in. Columbia frequently rejects students whose stats are incredible. At some point, it's a numbers game, and what you're getting here is an anonymous, unbiased opinion. I don't think one should religiously follow the guides posted here as much as use them for direction. Hey, if Columbia's your dream school, go for it, if you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose. If you can prove this is where you're meant to be, you may be given that chance.
