I want to apply to yale as an undergrad art major. I don't know whether to submit a portfolio or not, seeing that I have very little technical training. I've designed sets for five productions (three plays, a musical, a benefit fashion show runway), teach little kids arts and crafts, and do some web design. You can see my stuff at Portfolio - a set on Flickr

Nobody around here with my stats apply for arts--so I could seriously use any sort of advice!

Thanks in advance~~

Stats-wise, you are clearly qualified. I can't analyze your extracurriculars, because I don't know what Yale looks for in art students.

One thing I noticed--do you have any leadership positions in your clubs that you didn't mention? Top schools look for depth, not breadth, of involvement in extracurriculars.

i put my clubs under extracurriculars
american cancer society--publicty (makes posters)
california scholarship federation--senior class president (deal with all the seniors)
student forum--webmaster (manage the website)
marching band--section leader
wind ensemble--section leader
link crew--guide incoming freshmen around high school

typical asian female=no chance
sorry if i'm being harsh but thats the way many look at it
and remember depth not breadth which is another thing your application lacks
also, remember that you will be put head to head and neck to neck with other asians of comparable and in most cases probably higher standards than you. What do you have that will outshine them?

MAKE YOUR ESSAYS STAND OUT.
You are qualified. So are thousands of other applicants. The only way they're going to choose you over them is if you stand out to them in some way. The best way to do that? Write amazing essays.

i'm actually hoping my grades will help when i apply for the art school, because no offense to anyone, people with my stats generally apply math/science/business etc.

mostly i need advice about whether or not i should submit portfolio pieces, or just let my grades to the talking.

well you have to remember that at yale everyone is extraordinary in their niche...so not only will you need to submit a great profile, but you also will need to outshine every other artist applicant in that particular area of study...and most of these kids have won national level awards/are rising proteges/some even have their own acclaimed galas and galary's...so basically you have to stand out
