Chance me?

Here's my stats:

Current University: UC Riverside
Transferring as: Sophomore, undeclared

First quarter GPA: 3.81 (I plan to maintain this or better for the duration of the year)
Note: I've taken a difficult course load, first quarter classes were: calculus, chemistry, english
High school GPA: Unweighted was about a 3.3 Weighted 3.68ish
SAT: 1900
Extra curricular: I've been in a band for the last year, and have been writing music my entire life. I lead this band: record all the music, produce, book shows, etc. My band has also seen great success this last year (we've been in talks with record labels, we receive about 1000 listens a day on the internet)
I was in theater, drama, and musicals in high school, and at the end of my senior year won the award of "Best comedic actor" out of the entire school. Hopefully I can also get involved in a play this next quarter at UCR (I auditioned first quarter but didn't fit the part)

I tutored some fellow calculus students this last year in calculus, and was a piano teacher (for pay) this last year.

Potential hook: The reason I chose UC Riverside in the first place was because my dad had been paralyzed from the waist down because of a bicycle accident. I had to stay close to home to help him recover. I'm going to try to effectively show them that this tragic experience actually changed my life around and my overall mentality regarding education (it's true). My improved college grades should back up this claim.
I'm also referencing me helping my dad as volunteer work, since I've put in countless hours aiding his recovery.

I know my high schools stats are a bit crappy, but I'm hoping my college grades and essay could balance these out.

Anyways, let me know what you think my chances are at these schools:

Brown University
University of Washington
College of William and Mary
University of Virginia
University of Michigan
Northwestern University

Thank you so much!

p.s-I also posted "chances" threads in specific forums for a few of these colleges..sorry about that, I don't want to be a spammer. I'll see if I can delete those.

I think it'll hurt you that you're undecided. From what I understand, colleges want to see that you have a specific major path which can be enhanced by the new institution to which you are applying for transfer. I would think Brown and Northwestern are pretty big reaches.

i would think that ec's pertinent to ones academic interests would hold precident over ec's involving ones personal interests...the biggest problem with your application is that you don't have any kind of hook. you are an undecided major who doesn't have any ec's that are relevant to a potential career path or burning academic passion. Unless you are a music major...on your gpa alone, brown and nwestern are reaches, most of the rest are matches

Well I am mentioning in the essays that I have an interest for math, and I've done extra curricular math tutoring. I mean, it's not wonderful, but it's something.

also, if you are transferring for sophmore status, your hs performance will be a very big factor in your admission decision, perhaps more than your college performance...

From my research, I don't believe that high school performance is more important than college.

It is when you're transferring for sophomore status.

Could you provide a link or anything backing that up? I've heard that they're evenly weighted for sophomore status.

perhaps they are evenly weighted, perhaps hs is a bit more important than college (yes) if you insist on splitting hairs. you can go do the research if you don't wish to take our word for it...mind you, they will only be able to see one semester worth of your grades when you apply...one semester of college vs. 4 years of hs...hs record is a very big factor for soph admissions

Yeah I know Brown and Northwestern are pretty big reaches, haha. These are my dream schools though, so I'm going to apply anyways and do my best to stand out on the essay. I'm more interested in my chances for the other universities, can anyone give an opinion on that?

you're in at UMich thats for sure.

I sure hope so, that's my top choice amongst the publics.

I'm gonna bump this for another opinion or two

Sorry, but your high school grades and SAT scores will be very important given you are applying with only a single term in college. No essay will help at schools where you simply don't have the stats. You will not get into any college as a soph that you would not have gotten into out of high school.

Yes, but I'll be able to send grades from my second quarter as well. Don't you think these schools would take my two recent quarters as important? I've yet to see any college claim what you're claiming, especially regarding the essays. I know a few people who got into Brown with SAT scores in the 1700 hundred range straight out of high school. I realize that's only anecdotal evidence, but it still conflicts with what you're saying, hmom.

your being very defensive arcadefire...nobody on here would dispute the importance of sat scores for freshman admissions

your two recent quarters are certainly important and i would disagree that you couldnt potentially get into a school for soph transfers that you couldnt get into out of hs, but your not going to be able to make that far of a jump after just one semester

Sorry, I don't mean to be defensive, I'm only trying to get the correct information (and people telling me I suck can be a bit stressful, haha). Hopefully I'm making the right size jump.

this shouldnt be a stressful enviornment. nobody said you suck or anything close to it. you have very good college grades, its just a matter if they are good enough to get into the incredibly selective schools that you listed. it seems as if you came on her expecting people to affirm your chances at the listed schools, but you have to be a bit more open to what people are telling you. if you heed our advice, your chances of a successful xfer process will probably be better

I'm hella open. She hasn't given me any advice though..

Also, possibly worth noting, I didn't apply to any of these schools before.
