during summers i travel, my dad was born in croatia so i’ve spent every summer there since i was born, our family business is a yacht, i’ve met some really influential political figures which is partially why i’m so interested in global affairs
i’ve also been to germany with blue lake international youth symphony orchestra 2007
i traveled with a student group to spain last summer
and i’m going to china this summer

i’m looking into the ivies especially brown, it sounds fantastic

So…you’re a machine. Nothing seems to make you stand out…

that’s why i’m hoping for interview opportunities.
and i think my essay will help out with the not standing out problem.
what other things would you consider stand-out points?

Interview won’t get you in, trust me on that one.

But what have you done that will make your essay stand out? See, many kids write for newspapers/literary magazines and are part of clubs like NHS, etc. But what have you actually done?

I agree with above. Your essay better be ridiculously good or you may get lost in the shuffle of qualified applicants.

Also, if you plan on writing your essay on how meeting international leaders from your family’s yacht business has made you interested in International Relations, make sure not to come off as a spoiled kid.

most of that stuff ‘i’ve actually done’ has been through mission work with my church- building houses, teaching kids, fundraising for causes that i really care about, and spreading knowledge about real issues.
i mean i haven’t discovered the cure for cancer, but no one has.
i’ve heard that one of brown’s admission factors is character, and how else can they determine my character but through my interview and essay?

i don’t plan on writing about the people i’ve met, they’re not the reasons i want to go into international relations.
and i think through my essay they can see that i’m not spoiled.
i want to write about when i’ve learned on my travels, how they’ve opened my eyes to so many facets of our world and how that has motivated me to change it for the better.
and i won’t sound as cheesy as what i just wrote, hah. i’m a very spiritual person and that combined with experience makes me honestly so eager to good.

Hmm see most kids have done something grand. Doing mission work and stuff might be stuff that you genuinely care about, but how does it set you apart from the rest of us who have done exactly the same thing and more?

and i guess i’d better explain my ‘yacht business’
my dad grew up in a really poor family in croatia and dropped out of high school when his dad passed away and took over his day-trip tourist boat. two ships later he made a name for himself with our current ship, but he too passed away when i was 13, leaving the ship with my mom and i, sharing equal ownership according to croatian law. so it’s not like i’ve been a spoiled brat and grown up in luxury: i would never flaunt my inheritance because it wasn’t worth the cost.

i guess where i’m from, a suburb of chicago, most kids haven’t gone to mexico to build houses for the homeless. what’s something grand in your eyes?

building houses seems to be much more common these days haha. To give you an idea of what I mean, one of my friends got into Stanford 2 years ago. His main EC was playing the Saxophone and he had won tons of awards and had played in various countries. These schools like talent and passion. So what do you have? are you really interested in music?Sports?writing?Drama?

i want to write about when i’ve learned on my travels, how they’ve opened my eyes to so many facets of our world and how that has motivated me to change it for the better.

^ this would be a good topic to write about IMHO. Do you have a rough draft on these lines

i play viola, i traveled with an international youth orch to germany for a month one summer, i was 3rd chair there, otherwise i’ve been playing since fourth grade and gotten medals through various competitions, nothing huge tho. i’m trying out for chicago youth symph in april which i’m confident in. pit orchestra for 2 years, honors string ensemble. but i don’t plan on majoring in that or becoming professional for that matter…

no i don’t have a rough draft :frowning: it’s all in my head right now.

oh and i play gigs, mostly weddings and every sunday at church, along with major functions like easter and christmas, which i guess is good dedication right?

if I were you, i wouldnt give all EC’s details so early in the process. One can always PM.

Daniel: You seem like a motivated person who is genuinely interested in all of the things that you do. Please, please don’t succumb to this CC mindset of “What can I do to stand out more?” – just keep doing the things you love, and only worry about writing kickass essays to present yourself as the interesting, intelligent person that you are.

Hmm interesting, maybe write about this?
