Chance me?

Hey everyone, can you evaluate my chances for getting into TCNJ?
I am a junior right now and will be applying later this year. I have a gpa of 3.8(unweighted), Sat's-1870, 1230. Want to major in the regular biology program. Class rank probably in the top 15%. For the EC's i have the following,
3rd place in the UN day and International flag festival freshmen year
Awarded 'student in excellent roll' during sophomore year
Certificate of participation in English and Math assessments by the university of new southwales, Australia
Certificate of participation for TIME and education plus scholarship test
Awaded member for the National society of high school scholars
Sub-President for class council sophomore year
President of class council freshmen year
member of human relations committee, key club
Played Tenis for the Sports authority of AP
Member of literary club, science club
School basketball team and volleyball team during freashmen and sophomore year- Couldn't participate in any sports during junior year because of a nasal surgery during the summer of sophomore year
Organized a blood drive and cardiac awareness program

In school I take all level 1 courses and 1 AP in biology next year.
In-state student.

Your scores may be a little low but your ec’s could outweigh them. I can tell you it will most likely be very competitive for biology (as it was extremely competitive this year and I’m sure it will continue to be so). Overall though you are a pretty good candidate and I wish you all the best of luck!

I think if you took the SAT’s again you would probably have a better chance, especially for Biology since the average SAT score for bio students is 1350/1600. It’s their most competitive program and it is what TCNJ is prided upon. Being in state doesn’t really help either =/

Overall, I would say that you seem to have good EC’s and decent test scores, one thing that’s good about TCNJ is that it’s selectivity isnt just limited to tests 100% of the time. My girlfriend got an 1110/1600 (she had amazing EC’s) and was accepted. So it’s a toss up, I would wager it to be a high-match for you.

If you apply to one of the other programs you could always transfer into Bio, thats difficult too, but not as hard as making it in the first place.

Good luck!!!

Do you think that if I raise my SAT scores to around a 2050, 1300 i’ll have a better chance? And will aplying for early decision have an impact?

You’ll definitely have a better chance, and as for ED it would probably help as well, TCNJ is big on showing interest. Your chances would most likely be greater, but just be aware that the best students typically apply ED so it could be more competitive, and you must take whatever financial package is awarded to you. (this applies to all schools)

I agree with bdmet2491. Showing interest is very important for any school that you are serious about. I was accepted into Bio regular decision with an SAT score around 2050 and I had also been on campus three times by the time I applied.

Thanks a lot everyone. Any other suggestions will be a great help.

Hey – opinion from someone who works out of the admissions office.

Your SAT scores are the only thing holding you back. Your ECs are good and so is Top 15% – but every year, the biology program closes off super early for TCNJ and more and more people are applying to get in. I would say TCNJ is a slight reach if not a match for you, just try to raise those scores a bit if you can. TCNJ is also very big on offering admission but declining to place you within your desired school (as once x amount of seats are filled up, no more can be filled) so they may ask you to change your major (from bio to something else) if they accept you. Remember TCNJ is a rolling admissions process and Bio applications are due earlier than other majors – the earlier you get yours in, the earlier they’ll read it.
