I'm a junior, and don't have my scores for SAT subject tests, or teacher recommendations, etc, yet, so this isn't complete, but anyway..

I have a B+ average, but my school is really rigorous and i take challenging courses (no aps/ib because it is not offered).
My SAT scores were: critical reading: 770 writing: 710 math: 560, so the total is 2040. I'm going to take them again in the fall, though, to bring the math and writing scores up.
For extracurriculars, I have played a musical instrument for about 7 years, and am involved in a music ensemble, i volunteer at the local hospital, and am co-president of a community service club at my school. In the summer I did volunteer work abroad, and this summer, I am participating in a music program at a college and am continuing volunteer work at the same hospital, and perhaps something else as well.
I have been told that I am a strong writer, so I can probably write a good essay, and I think I will be able to get good recommendations.
Schools that I am thinking about are:
Bates, Brandeis, Williams, Tufts, Colby, Bowdoin, Skidmore, Middlebury, Goucher, Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Pitzer, Kenyon, Vassar etc. I do not have an actual list of schools that I am applying to yet, but these are my ideas so far. Yes, I realize some of these schools are reaches, but do you think I am going to have to go to a community college or state school? :(

thank you!

Don’t worry about the writing scores, most schools don’t look at them. Your scores are very good, your grades are meh, and your ECs are pretty good. I think you have a lot of reaches in there, so just apply to a couple of safeties as well. (Like your state school)

I would agree, just try to raise your math score to at least 630 just so schools won’t reject you before they look over your whole application. I doubt you will have to go to a community college state school, but you may want to consider some schools in the ranks of Temple University(a low match/high safety) or University of Pittsburgh (probably a match). Although you aren’t one of the amazing people on this site, you are still a well above-average student, and you have a lot of options.

thanks for responding…
if my grades for the second semester of junior year and senior year, are, say, A- or higher average, would this help me?

Yes, but probably not significantly. That is, unless you somehow transform them to 97s or higher. I wouldn’t really worry about it too much though.

The math score is crucial. If you can get it to a mid-600s or better your chances should become realistic.

I agree with thinker88. Your math score is definitely going to be very important since most school tend to focus on math and reading scores. You are on the right track and I think you could get into at least one of the schools you listed. Don’t know why going to a state school would be bad but I guess it depends on what state you live in. I live in NC so my state schools are pretty high ranked.
