You will more than likely be admitted early and selected as a semi-finalist for the President’s Scholarship(provided you apply by Oct. 31). You will also be competitive for other tech scholarships.

I agree with InPursuit

once you are accepted as a semifinalist for the presidential scholarship, what exactly happens? also, are there more merit based scholarships other than the presidential scholarship because I am coming from out of state and paying 20k+ a year is not very attractive.

You’re contacted by an alumni association in your area, and they perform an interview.

There are many more merit scholarships. Some are offered by the alumni association (they normally award them to students they interview in the PS process) and some are offered by the school automatically as part of your financial aid award. There are also awards that you can seek out based on different characteristics (gender, race, major, etc.).

But the first step with all of those is to get admitted. Apply for admission very early (August/September - whenever applications open).

Ok that is very good to know. So, if I do apply earlier than Oct. 31 (say September), will I get my decision sooner than if I applied right at the end of October? I know these questions may sound stupid, but it is difficult having no brothers/sisters to look to for this advice.

Yes, you will get notification of your status earlier, and if you make semi-finalist you will interview earlier as well. If you apply before Oct. 1 and do not make semi-finalist you would be reconsidered for semi-finalist with the people who applied by Oct. 31, although I’m fairly confident that you’ll be notified that you are a semi-finalist after the first round. Just don’t screw up your essay, as that can be very important for PSP and admission to the honors program, if that is something you are interested in.

GT also has OOS grants and Dean’s Scholarships for each school among other scholarships. If you have a local alumni chapter you may be able to apply for a scholarship through that chapter and GT will match any award they offer you.

In any event, it is in your best interest to apply by the first deadline and ensure that you submit a very strong essay.

Best of Luck!
