Chance me?

I just finished my junior year and I've really been considering applying to Pepperdine.

GPA:
3.4 UW
3.2 W
- I really screwed up freshman year, I got 3 C's. It was the same semester my parents announced they were getting divorced and I had heart surgery. I also developed an eating disorder later that year. I'm recovered now, but I'm going to talk about these experiences in my essays.
- I haven't taken a ton of honors classes. I took honors history soph. year, and will take AP English and History next year. But I've wanted to, but with my school it's very hard to get in, even if you're doing well in the regular class - I was getting a 95% in history freshman year, and they wouldn't move me up to honors. Same with English soph year. I know I should have gotten my parents to call in and get me in - it's a huge regret of mine. I will try to get this into the essays as well.

- Variety show 4 years
- Boston University Summer Challenge this summer

Thank you!!

You have pretty good SAT scores and ECs, but your GPA is kind of weak. I wouldn’t discuss your parents’ divorce or your eating disorder in your essay, but you may want to mention the heart surgery as a reason for poor grades your freshman year. Most colleges don’t factor in freshman grades anyway. Calculate your GPA with only academic classes grades 10-12 for what they will most likely look at.
I think you should apply and see what happens, but really focus on cranking out incredible essays.

If you do mention these be sure to describe how you’ve strengthened as a person. Pepperdine wants to know what you will BRING to the table.

I will definitely mention how they’ve helped me to change and become a better, stronger person - not just complain about them. Thanks!
