Some more facts
I know my GPA is pretty low (my transcript is filled with half A’s and half B’s)
I am an extremely hard-working student and I always challenge myself.
I have overcome a chronic illness that almost took my life when I was two and I continue to live with the side affects (visible physical deformities) – but, this has made me into a strong woman and I never let myself feel defeated because of it.

During my freshman year, my life was almost overcome by tragedy, I was repeatedly abused by an adult figure and I was forced to go through a court trial during my junior year. The stress from the trial and the emotional/psychological impact heavily impacted my academic performance during my freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Nonetheless, I continued to challenge myself and performed well in all my classes. Do you think Barnard will take these into account considering my low GPA and Terrible SAT scores?

Thank you so much and Good luck to all of you!

i think your story will help a bunch… especially if you have your counseler write about it in the rec letter… and also a good thing to write an essay on

SAT is the only thing that is kinda off…

you have a shot. but i wouldnt not consider is a done deal.

good luck!

i too have a deformity from an illness I had a child (i was three years old though) and suffer from the results of it now (i have undifferentiated connective tissue disease). I was also abused by an adult. I was hospitalized as a result of the abuse my sophomore year. Weird similarities!

I had higher SATs, a higher GPA, but about the same SAT IIs. And I didn’t get in. But this doesn’t mean you won’t. I don’t think that these chance threads are really of any good use. Nobody really knows the formula to any university! Wants are always changing.
If you are meant to go to this school, you will be there next year.
You don’t need luck. You already have strength and power!

“but, this has made me into a strong woman and I never let myself feel defeated because of it.”

That attitude sounds like it would make an incredible Barnard essay! It follows the spirit of women empowerment. Really, more than what you do or go through, they care about the attitude with which you do it. This essay could easily have been a “pity me, I’m different” essay, but it isn’t. Your attitude captures who you really are, and I think Barnard will appreciate that.

Whoops, I somehow read that that was your essay topic. It may or may not be, but you still have a brilliant attitude.

vkfeb95 good luck  i hope u will be accepted
i hope the class of 2014 at barnard will be a class with lots of strong women like u

Thank you so much for your feedback. Just to clarify, I did write about the unfortunate circumstances I had to go through in the Additional information section of my application. My main essay however, did not address them.
