I have a 4.0 UW 4.8 W GPA and a 32 ACT score. My math score was really high, but the ACT is easy math so I can't imagine it being that important. Here's the issue: I got very sick the day of my SAT II's and scored really low. I don't remember the exact scores, but Math II was around 500 and English Literature was around 550. I plan on majoring in physics and although I have another chance for the Ivy's, these scores will go to the UC's. My only EC's are volunteer tutoring, freemasonry, and playing musical instruments. My essay prompts were great.

I would prefer to go to UCLA, but UCSB is in second, followed by Berkely, Davis, San Diego, Irvine and Santa Cruz in last.

Would switching my major to something like communications, then changing my major to physics give me better chances of acceptance into UCLA, or is switching from an idiot major to a hard science major infeasible?

A final question. When I retake the tests in January, if I get 650+, what will my chances be for Stanford or the Ivy's? If 650 isn't enough, what is? And is 32 enough for an ACT score?

Also, I’ve been thinking of switching my major to communications and staying with it. I’d be happier studied communications at UCLA than physics at UC Santa Cruz. How much less dependent is a communications major on the SAT II Math II? And is physics with a backup of communications the equivalent of communications with another easy major as a backup?

-First of all, I’ve never been a fan of people swapping majors just to get in. UC’s do not base their decisions on what major you are too much, so you wouldn’t see a significant bump in my opinion.
-I don’t personally think SAT2 tests factor too much in a decision, but be sure to send your new SAT subject test scores to the UC’s. You have more than enough time.
-What is your UC gpa? Could affect your decision substantively.

UCLA-High Match, if you send those new scores
UCSB-IN
Berkely-Reach for everyone
Davis- IN
San Diego-Low Match
Irvine-Match
Santa Cruz-IN
Stanford- High Reach i would say

Wouldn’t a *****y mathematician have better chances of being accepted into an easy major than a math-heavy major like physics?

I need to call the UC’s for my UC GPA (long story), but if my UC GPA is 4.0 and my transcripts say 4.8 W 4.0 W, would they only look at the UC GPA or would they take my 4.8 into account, thinking, "well his UC GPA is 4.0, but his high school GPA is extremely high.

How well do I need to do on the SAT subjects to have good chances of getting into UCLA?
