Chance me

Hi, I'm going to be a senior next year, and would just like some input. I plan to ED to Cornell Engineering, so that takes priority I guess.

Grades etc:

3.968 GPA

690 CR 710 W 680 M

waiting on SAT IIs

4 on AP Euro, waiting for AP US. Next year I'm taking AP french, AP Physics, and AP Calc AB, all others are honors, except my semester electives (ancient Egypt and electric circuits)

We don't rank (private school etc), but as far as I can tell, top 10%.

Picked math(math analysis honors) and a physics(honors) teachers for recs.

I know I can write a pretty good essay.

ECs.

By graduation, will have put in over 60 hours of community service, school related and outside as well.

National Honors Society

Helped design a jungle gym for a playground for children in the Dominican (I mention it because of engineering)

Organized a food drive for an organization in Philadelphia called Philabundance

French Club

Taekwon-do (Now, I know the list looks slim, but this is the strong point. I've done it since 1996, 4-5 days a week, basically committed my life outside of school to it. I figure that a major commitment is more important than a cramming of ECs to look busy. When I am not training, I teach and assist younger students)

Also, not sure if this is relevant, but either commended or semifinalist for national merit/psat thing(will know in September)

Cornell is my ED, so I'd like to know that most of all, but if I get deferred, I will apply to UPenn, Drexel, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, and possibly Princeton. Thanks in advance!

…anyone? forgot to add a one week summer program called Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, basically you try and sell a product, and the engineers have to design and pitch said product.

You have an outside shot at Cornell.
No shot at Penn. Stanford or Princeton
You will get into Drexel and CMU no problem.

cool, could you be less of a jerk and give more info? thanks

You need to get your SAT up.

Sorry, but how am I being a “jerk?”
You wanted chances, I gave them to you.

What more info do you want?
If you want to know why you will get into Drexel and CMU, I’ll tell you: Your GPA is certainly good enough and your test scores are at or above the typical admitted student to those schools.

You have an outside shot at Cornell because although your test scores are somewhat below the typical Cornell student your relatively high GPA might push you over the line. A 680 M is way below the line for any top engineering school (including Cornell). You might want to apply to Arts and Sciences and then if you get in try transferring to engineering.

Penn. Stanford and Princeton: Any admit to those schools with under a 2200 is virtually unheard of without a hook. Even with your GPA and a 2400 I would put your chance at any of those at no better than 15%.

^soze is right. sorry :(

I have a 2180 SAT Composite and 3.94 UW GPA, and the only reason I have a decent shot at Yale and Stanford is because I’m a URM and I believe that may give me a slight edge.

Soze also gave some great advice: apply Arts & Sciences, then transfer to engineering. That is, if your math score is still a 680 when you apply. Because schools that prestigious won’t be at all impressed with your math score, especially taking into account that you’re an aspiring engineer.

Cornell ED is possible. It’ll be difficult, but I think it’s within reach if you write really good essays…still though, if you don’t get a 2150+ SAT composite by the time you apply, its a very high reach.

Stanford and Princeton will take a miracle. Penn a little less extreme than that, but still on the same platform.
