chance me :)

Hey, can you guys chance me for cornell?
My stats are:
Gpa/Wgpa: 3.44/4.14
Rank/Percentile: our school doesnt have one/wont tell us
SAT 1: 2400
SAT 2: US History 800
Bio 750
Math 2 800
Physics 800
AP exams:
all 5s - Calc BC, US History, Biology

I took the hardest classes all 4 years, assuming i get straight As next year, senior year courseload=ap physics, multivariable clac, ap chem, ap lang, ap chinese

I volunteered like 100 hours at our library and foodbank.
Ive done sports, but no huge awards or anything..

Im a ORM btw. Thanks all! Also chance me for schools around the same rank i.e. Brown JHU

what’s an orm? do you mean urm?

to chance you, we need to know what college you want to apply to and what major. im assume you’re thinking CAS or CALS?

ecs: need work. you don’t have that many hours and what the descriptions don’t seem impressive. cornell wants to see ec’s that are in line with your academic and career goals. is there a reason you chose the library and food bank?

gpa: i don’t know how cornell rates the classes/ap classes, but your gpa is kind of low. but others who had similar stats may have better feedback

all in all it just really depends. nothing stands out what you wrote, but you may be leaving stuff off or forgetting something. also, it really depends on letters and essays so…

thanks for the response! orm is the opposite of urm. and im not completely sure what im majoring yet, something in the sciences tho.

Do you think I have a decent chance tho? Like a reasonable reach-ish?

so you’re saying you’re caucasian?

it’s SO hard to chance ppl. none of us really know what the ad coms are looking for. the stats you listed are kind of vague so i don’t really know. i mean, cornell takes into account so many factors, your number stats, your letters of rec, your essays, etc. going JUST off your numbers, like i said, your GPA seems a little low. but i don’t know how low (im sure there are lots of ppl who got into cornell with a 3.4). the major issue I see is your ECs. they are relatively few hours and they don’t really seem special/important to you.

if you have a hook, if you have teachers that love you and can write amazing letters of rec, and if you a clear idea as to why cornell is a unique and perfect opportunity for you (that you can communicate in your essays) then you def have shot. but if you’re looking to apply to cornell as “just another school on your list” i’m not too sure.

Honestly I think you will only be in the reasonable reach-ish zone if you highlight a SPECIFIC passion in a very well-written essay. Based on what you’ve posted, you don’t have any hooks whatsoever (your SAT is very impressive but it’s downplayed by your mediocre GPA). I was admitted with a mediocre SAT and a slightly higher GPA than yours but I also had dedicated, focused ECs that I held very high leadership positions in. I used these to my advantage in my personal statements. I’m also half-URM (my other half is ORM, however, so I don’t think this helped me much).

The bottom line is that your numerical stats will only get your foot into the door at Cornell. They are by no means the end all and be all, which I’m sure you know already - but at the same time, I think that the quality of your statements and your resume is JUST as essential as a GPA or test score. ESPECIALLY if you’re looking to major in something science-related.

If you ever need any help with essays, feel free to PM me! I am Class of 2014 and won’t be attending Cornell but I was accepted.
