Chance Me

I'm going to be a senior this year and I want to apply for a few SUNYs (Albany, Stony Brook, Buffalo, Binghamton, maybe Buffalo State) as a math major for fall 2011. However, based on what I'm seeing and at the school's websites, my chances are slim.

GPA : UW 82.0 (I think that's a 2.8 on a 4.0 scale) and W 86 (3.1 on a 4.0 scale)?
SAT Scores : Due to being sick I wasn't able to take it in June, but my projected will be 610 (CR) 550-600 (M) 480-520 ( W)
Type of High School : Rigorous Catholic High School
Course Rigor : I took Honors English for grades 9-10 and will be taking AP English senior year. Also, I have taken Honors Science for grades 9-11 and will be taking AP Bio senior year. I'm taking Pre-Calc senior year since I have just finished Algebra II/Trig.
ECs : 100 + of Volunteer work ( which includes working at a hospital and school tutorial program. Also includes non-recorded hours at a local soup kitchen), Spotlight Supervisor of the school's technical crew for all school functions
Other : Female, GPA is on an (slight) upward trend, I did bad in physics (got a D+ even though I tried my best to raise it) but I don't know how I will explain it in my essay, applying to HEOP program, First-Generation Student, Lower-income. Essay is about how the school tutorial program helped me to realize how much I loved math.

Thank you so much. :)

As far as I know, UB, Binghamton, and Stony Brook look like they’re reaches for you. I’m sort of unsure about Albany too, but I think Buffalo State would be attainable.

I would try some of the smaller schools…POtsdam. Plattsburgh, Oswego, Fredonia, Brockport, also Buff State. I think you would have trouble with Stony Brook, Albany, Binghamton, SUNY Buffalo, Oneonta and Geneseo and New Paltz.
The SUNY website has a chart with the statistics for each school. good luck!

I’m considering applying through EOP because my father is the only one that works and I think my family fits the guidelines. I think my grades would fit into the EOP candidate. However, I don’t know if being on the lower end will harm me in the end since my GPA is a B-. Does applying to EOP help me or harm me in the end?

Applying for EOP can probably only help you and if you’re accepted you’ll receive additional support that can help you succeed in college. If you don’t meet the EOP standard at a particular school I believe you’ll just be treated as a regular applicant.

Have you considered starting at a CC? If you can build a solid academic record in the first year or two there it would give you many transfer options. I second holliesue’s advice of looking at the smaller SUNY’s as well. I think the universities are going to be very difficult for you to gain admissions and I would worry about the level of academics vs. support being overwhelming to you there.

I am applying to a few colleges in the CUNY system as well, including Borough of Manhattan community college. I think I would be able to handle the course load at a major University since I have taken some honors classes (my school doesn’t offer much APs) and I have gotten usually Bs to A-s in those classes.

I am also most likely applying to Old Westbury or Buffalo State, but I don’t know if they have a good math department.

I also forgot to add in the info that I’m from the NYC area (Bronx to be exact) and I’m a URM (which I don’t think matters as much in the SUNY system)

Hi Mekkuh93–

Bing, Buffalo & Albany may be a stretch for you, but you have a shot.

Stony Brook should be more of a match but you may only have a 45-55% chance.

If you improve your ECs & have good recommendations, you should be a good candidate for SB.

CUNYs, on the other hand, I’d suggest you try John Jay and/or City College.

I’m from the city as well, but I go to Forest Hills.
I’m sort of in the same boat as you, only my SAT score was a 1700 (1080 CR+M)
I’ve interned, volunteered and my GPA unweighted falls in the 2.9-3.0 range (I’m not sure). I’ve also worked in my junior year. Active in two clubs at school and rec letters should be no problem.

My choices of schools are:
Ohio University (not Ohio State!)
Rutgers
Stony Brook
St. Joseph College (all girls school in CT)
Syracuse

^ I realize that Rutgers & OU might be reach schools for me.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

CUNYs: my safety schools:
Brooklyn, John Jay, City

City College is actually one of the colleges I want to apply to. What are you going to major in ?

I could get good recommendations from my math teacher ( I had her for both Geometry and Algebra II/Trig) as well as my English teacher (will be my second year having her). Syracuse I heard might be a hard college to get into.

I was hoping to join Volleyball senior year because I feel that I need to do a sport to help me health wise.

Thanks everyone :)

I want to major in social work, but I can settle for Business.

haha If you join VB, you can also list that on your app.

Good luck!

Thanks, good luck to you too :)

Are you applying to any SUNYs ?

Yeah, Stony Brook & possibly Plattsburgh.
I’ll figure out if I wan to apply to Platts by the end of the summer.

I’m also applying to UMaine@Machias as another safety option bc I want to dorm.

update–

I’m going to apply to Stony Brook & Plattsburgh.
Won’t be applying to UMaine@Machias.

Help me out please, I need another school that’s similar to Ohio U in terms of rank that I can get into.

Have you considered UMass- Amherst ? I heard it’s pretty good.

I did, I have a shot at it but I’m not sure I want to take that risk. It’s a great school but I’m worried that my grades’ll be taken as a joke if I apply there.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/969794-chance-me-school-suggestions-will-chance-back.html

Just to update this, I took the SAT and got a 560(M), 540( CR), and 570(W)

I also wonder if I should apply for EOP because my gpa is an 81 unweighted(85 weighted) and my parents don’t make much money.

And my regents scores

Algebra I - 84
Geometry- 81
Algebra II/Trig- 75( Retaking it =_____=)
Physics-55 (might retake it)
Chemistry-81
Living Environment- 83
English- 87
French- 80
Global- 88
US History-97
