I just want to get other people's opinions on how strong of an applicant I am.

I applied ED to CoE

GPA: 5.0 (weighted)
4.0 (unweighted)
I took too many regular classes freshman year and it murdered my weighted GPA :/

Rank: 41/956 Top 5% (school was once the most populated in the nation)
SAT I: 620 R - 800 M - 710 W (retook it Nov 6th. Hopefully reading will go up)
SAT II: 790 Physics - 790 Math II - 750 Chem
AP: Calculus AB/BC 5/5 - Chemistry 5 - Physics B 5

Current Courses: AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP US Government, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics

Essays: Everybody (20+ people) who read my essays thought they were really good. Common App essay was about maturing junior year. Sounds kind of generic now that I think about it. Engineering essay was about cars and how Cornell can help me become an automotive engineer.

Rec. Letters: Physics teacher: thought it was pretty decent.
Statistics teacher: wrote it on the last day because another teacher failed to but he absolutely loves me and I'm sure it was really good.
Counselor Rec.: Recommended me enthusiastically on SSR

Lol that was just a joke, but explain one thing. How come you say your gpa was murdered freshman year when unweighted its 4.0 and weighted its 5.0. Whats it out of? Is it 4.0/5.0 and 5.0/6.0?

unweighted is out of 4.0 and the weighted doesn’t really have a maximum. idk if it works this way in every school but we get a 4 for an A in a regular class, a 5 in an honors, and a 6 in an AP (however, AP courses at my school only get “AP credit” 2nd semester and “honors credit” first semester). #1 at my school has a 5.3. Our school is pretty competitive in my opinion, we all try to kill each other. It just ****es me off that I know I could be so much higher if I actually cared about my future freshman year and didn’t take classes such as band, art, and physics fitness…

im not really an expert but i think you have a really good chance because academically you seem fit (hope your november scores will go up a bit though) and i like how there’s like hints of interest for art in your extracurriculars. also your hooks make your app even more amazing. good luck!

Retaking the SAT was a good choice since Cornell accepts only the M+CR composite. Your GPA is ridiculous, but your class rank doesn’t seem to correspond appropriately. However, with your GPA, URM status, and SAT IIs, I think you’re in if you went ED and had good essays.

Your SATs are on par and your GPA is out of this world if it’s a 4.0 unweighted and the highest in your class is a 5.3. Your standardized test scores other than your regular SAT are really solid too, and your ECs and essays seem pretty decent. You seem like the perfect candidate for CoE even without your hook, so with urm you have a really good chance.

I explained how my GPA is calculated at my school a few posts above. Could anyone tell me if that is how they are normally calculated at other schools? I really hope my CR score goes up but the CR section in the November SAT was kind of hard Hopefully it has a pretty decent curve. Anyways, thank you 1x612nt13 and dontfeedsparky :)

November scores were a complete disappointment -_- My reading and writing scores stayed the same and my math went down by 50.
620CR - 750M - 710W

ok so our school weights honors by multiplying the standard scale by 7/6, and AP by 4/3. So the maximum you can get for honors is 4.67 and the maximum you can get for AP is 5.33. So I can see why you think my 4.33 weighted is extremely low lol. If you’re getting a 5, that’s like a 4.67 at my school, which is still really really high.

And honestly, does that GPA and your CR really matter? I don’t think people applying to CoE in general have extremely impressive CR scores lol, and the numerical part of your application is more than enough. Worry more about the type of person you portrayed yourself as in your app.

Because that’s what I’m doing and I’m flipping out that they might not like me lol.

ehh I’m not sure if you understood how GPA is calculated at my school. If you get an A in an honors class, thats a 5 towards your GPA. Therefore, if you only take honors classes throughout highschool and get straight As, you’ll have a 5.0 GPA. Getting straight As in an AP course gives you a 5 first semester and a 6 second semester (with a few exceptions such as Calulus AB/BC which gives you a 6 all year and AP government & economics which gives you a 6 for 3 of the 4 quarters of the year). I’m pretty sure they won’t care too much about my GPA since I feel like I made up for it by taking the most difficult course load possible this year and I feel like my CR is TOO low even though I don’t think they’ll pay too much attention to it. I’m really hoping that my letters of recommendation and essays appeal to them. I’m getting too attached to the school already and would be devastated if I got rejected :/

Again, don’t worry about your GPA. Your grades are far far far above the average applicant, and Cornell has accepted many people with below a 4.0 weighted GPA at our school early decision. They’ve also rejected some of our top students. It’s almost ridiculous how you think that you’d have to “make up” for your GPA by taking a heavy courseload; it’s already abnormally high lol, especially if you’re unweighted GPA is a 4.0 clearly your transcript is LITTERED with As. Your CR is not TOO low there are plenty of people with both lower math and CR who have gotten into Cornell AND CoE, and at an admissions session they made it very clear that they thought standardized tests are not accurate portrayals of how smart/hard-working you are. That’s the last reason they’d reject you for.

Whoa! Your first sat score was exactly identical to my last year’s (the 620, 800, 710).

Some advice on the reading, if you are retaking sat: do the CR sections in the Colllege Board book. Then redo it. again, again, again. In the writing section, plan out the essay and have examples ahead of time. Make sure you write on two full pages. An increase in the essay section by 1 or 2 points can up your writing score by many points.
