Hi! I'm a rising HS senior, and I really want to get into Rice. Based on the stats I have below, do I have any chance of getting in?

Weighted GPA: 4.4 (Don't know my Unweighted)

SAT: 1970 600 Math, 660 CR, 710 Writing, 10 Esssay

SAT II: USH 750 (Lit, Bio, and Math I are pending -taking them in October)

ACT: Scores aren't in yet

AP Classes that I will have taken by the end of senior year: AP Language, AP USH, AP Psych, AP Stat, AP Bio, AP Lit

Rank: 9 out of 176 (I think my rank has improved but there's no way I'll find out until the beginning of the school year).

Violinist in school's symphonic orchestra

NHS

Volunteer for Indian Film Festival

Will volunteer at a dentist office

Female

Not white, not African-American, not Indian, not Hispanic, not Oriental Asian

Planning on doing a self-study on neuroscience topics/psychology this summer

Prospective field: Neuroscience + Medicine

Thanks in advance! :)

Oh, and I’m also in-state… :/

And… applying ED.

ED will help some, but I would try and work over the summer on your SAT and then retake. 1970 is slightly low for a non URM or recruit. If your ACT scores are significantly higher, don’t worry about it!

^^ Agreed. Work on improving the standardized test scores

I think I’m going to focus on the ACT. I’m taking my SAT IIs in October and I’m not sure whether or not Rice will accept the November SAT I test score. If I can get a 31-32 ACT, will I be “in,” so to speak?

Definitely not a guaranteed “in” but it will definitely improve how they view your standardized test scores compared to the 1970 on the SAT. Get an interview! Good luck

@jztimmons: Besides the horrible test scores, how does everything else look?

bumpppppppppppppppppppppppyyyyyyyyy bumpppppppppppppppppppp

bumpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

everything else looks good for rice. that is why every1 is saying work on your sat score. try to get it around a 2100 atleast. then you could be “safe so to speak”

Ok, I will. But if I take it in November, will Rice get it in time?

bumpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppityyyy bumpppp

Looks like the November 5 SAT will be just fine … Timed practice tests and lots of attention to your weak areas will help boost your scores. And it looks like you have lots to write about in your essays …

Thanks Ottoline! I’ll re-take it in November. One thing, though: if my ACT score turns out to be ok (I won’t know until tomorrow, grrrrr) should I not re-take the SAT?

B-u-m-pppppppppppppppppppppp

If your ACT is in the 31 (with a decent distribution) to 33 range, there’s no real need to retake the SAT unless you feel you can improve by a lot.

I’m going to know my ACT score in less than an hour! I’m.so.nervous.

Bump bump bubumpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

Post the score so that someone can give you a more accurate opinion. People will respond when they have time/answers. Bumping the thread 2 minutes after you post is not going to help at all

My first time taking it and I failed miserably:

28 Composite

34 English
24 Math
33 Reading
21 Science

8 out of 12 on the Essay
