What are going to be her safety, match, and reach schools?

PS -if anything is unclear, feel free to ask! Thanks again!

“Female”
“Varsity Wrestling”

Major Respect right there ^

true. What will be her safety, match and reach schools?

UCLA, Michigan and Wisconsin are all reaches with that SAT score.

what about the other UC’s, CSU’s and other privates I mentioned? Are they all matches, and safeties?

If my cousin decides to retake the sat, what score should she be aiming for UCLA, Umich, and Wisconsin?

To make up for her lack of weighted GPA, she needs a 2100 or so to be competitive with 700+ in both SAT2s for UCLA. For the other publics she’ll probably be a strong admit with those SATs I just named above. It’s very very doable so it’s not a sweat at all. She has more than enough time to study for those scores. I’d wager she could get a 2200 if she really took her summer time seriously and put it to good use.

She’ll probably get into UMich and Wisconsin without a hitch as long as she improves her SAT to just 1900 or so because Umichigan has like a 50% accept rate and Wisconsin is nowhere near as selective as UCLA. UCLA is a reach but I’d say she’s a decent match for the other schools just make sure she raises her SAT scores for sure. It’s a must. As for the other UCs, it’s still tough because she lacks GPA power so she needs a higher SAT than 2000.

she is not applying to Berkeley or USC as those schools dont have nursing programs

SAT of over 2100 (atleast) for Michigan. A 1900 like the above poster said won’t cut it. Michigan is tough for out of state students to get into so you need to stand out.

^ I know 6 people personally that got into Michigan from my high school that were all rejected from both UCLA and Berkeley and none of them had over a 2100 SAT. Obviously a lot of other factors go into admission besides SAT, but I was just giving advice based on what I have seen. We are all from California public HSs. I’m not saying Michigan is easy to get into at all, but whether out of state or not, it still has an acceptance rate of ~50%.

Michigan is weird with acceptances. Some people with very high stats get rejected, some people with very low stats get accepted (don’t let the 50% admit rate deceive you… it’s not easy to get in to). I would personally say a 2100+ would be safer than a 1900 because of the lower gpa, and it’s definitely something to work for.
Michigan also uses recs which definitely help if she has glowing recommendations.

pastalover-she has lots of recs from the hospital she volunteers at, the varsity coach for wrestling, and the church she is a part of.

pastalover, I never said that a 1900 is safe for Michigan. I wasn’t trying to imply that and of course she should shoot higher. In fact, everyone should be shooting for a very high score I hope because if they aren’t trying to get all the questions they are answering correct why bother taking the test? Also, I find admissions rates to be the least deceiving of any statistic. 50% means 50%. That’s pretty much it. With other stats such as SAT ranges they can skew it whatever way they want by omitting or including sports recruits as well as other students etc etc. Admission rate is just that. Just a rate.

Anyway, yes 1900 was probably a bit too optimistic but UMich is easier to get into than the top UCs.

g0ld3n- is she a match for UCI, or UCD?

Are her safeties going to be the CSU’s and the privates like life university of san francisco, dominican, out of states like umass and boston college?

Because the UC admissions process is, for the most part, a numbers-game, chances are unlikely. However, your cousin seems to have some good extra-curricular activities and might fare better with similarly ranked privates.

albama- my aunt told me that privates are too expensive however, I told her that privates tend to give more fin aid than publics.

bump…

bump…

I’ve seen people with those stats get into UCI, a few UCD (Davis was tough on admissions this year though… so I dont know anymore) and SD State. My friend had around the same GPA, but a higher SAT and got into Boston University. USF should be a safety, not that hard to get into.

With the amount of income her family receives-- not sure how much, if any, financial aid she’d get, especially out of public universities.

Sorry to say that I think it is highly likely she won’t get in :frowning: UCLA is very big on strong academics and your cousin’s stats are not at par with those of students who were admitted for 2011. The avg GPA of an entering freshman is 4.4 and SAT score is 2030. Maybe if she works on her SAT score. Her extracurriculars look good though! Sorry to say though, that UCLA does not weight ec’s as heavily as academics. Best of luck though!

Like everyone said in the thread, if she really wants to get into UCLA, she needs to improve that SAT score. 2000+ (preferably 2100+) and she’ll have a chance.

Its a pain to study for, but she can take it in November, giving her plenty of time to study. Unfortunately, UC’s are a number game.
