Chance my D at W&L and Davidson

She's obviously applying elsewhere. These are the two toughest...

White female
Competitive Catholic HS
GPA: uw 4.0 w 4.5
ACT 33 (taking again in April)
All honors and ap classes
EC's: varsity volleyball, varsity swim, volunteers at Graceworks ministries 10 hours/month, part time job as a barista
Awards: all the standard stuff

she can play D3 volleyball just not sure she wants to...

Thanks!

W&L: High match (your D can’t really have it any better)
Davidson: Match/high match

Thanks for the reply. However, I think you are being very generous!

A high match is ~20-40% chance to get in, so Davidson is about ~30-50%.

My bad…I made the mistake of assuming high match meant a slam dunk!!

A low match would have described a near-slam-dunk…

What do you think would improve her chances? I feel confident that she will improve her act score.

Bump…anyone else?

Both are Matches. I would bet one getting at minnimum waitlisted at one

An increase in the ACT will not do much for her…

She has to take the act’s again bc she didn’t take the writing test. Any suggestions to increase her chances?

Depends on financials…chances at either would probably be better ED, but that’s a pretty big chunk of money. Davidson makes no bones about tracking interest…contact area rep, go by any college fair they are at, see if there is group meeting near (not sure where you are). Definitely visit. W&L doesn’t say it as outright, but I think interest is good thing. Requires interview with either admissions or alumni in your area.Tons of athletes at W&L…D mentioned when she first got there how many taller girls there were (she’s tall) and I think it’s all the athletes.

Also, the top scholarship at Davidson is the Belk which is one you have to be nominated for by your school. Be sure D talks to her guidance/college counselor about nominating her for that (I think only one person per school can be, but there’s also an athletic one). Again, if lots of people from her HS want to go there, getting nomination might be hard also.

Also, I think both schools require SAT subject tests, so check into that since easier to take right after APs, etc. when subject is fresh.

Thanks! She is taking SAT subjects in June.

Please have patience with me as I am pretty new to all this…

My D’s measurables are very good. Her EC’s are solid. Her rec’s will be great and her essay will be top notch (writing is her thing). She has also shown lots of demonstrated interest by making official visits and keeping in touch with the adcoms.

So, my question is this…is she a match/high match at these schools because these schools are so selective OR is there something missing from her resume?

Thanks!

Personally, I would say because they are so selective…they have a lot of students with equal credentials. Selection will probably be made because of that “something” admissions sees in essays or transcript that they particularly like…very hard to predict.

We have already visited W & L. Will be doing an overnight visit in the Fall with a family friend who is a Johnson scholar. Also will be attending a few classes. We are also visiting Davidson in June. Will most likely go back for an overnight deal in the Fall.

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts…keep 'em coming!

~ showing interest, this is good :)

We need a travel secretary to make all the travel arrangements necessary to “show interest”!!
