Chance my D1 - currently a junior - hopeful engineering major

D would like to major in aerospace or mechanical engineering; right now interested in Villanova, U Md, Lehigh, RPI and RIT . Would also consider schools without aerospace such as Lafayette and Binghamton.

ACT:29 (but has to retake because we didn’t realize some schools want ACT writing - rookie mistake);
GPA UW - 97.1; W - 101 (through end of sophomore year); current gpa 1st and second semesters - UW - 96; W - 105.6.
all courses were pre-IB (freshman and sophomore year) and IB (jr and sr year)
Electives: 2 PLTW Engineering courses; Python; 2 robotics courses

EC: Cross Country - varsity runner 3 years; co captain jr year; all county and all league soph and jr years; rookie of the year
Winter track - varsity 3 years; rookie of the year; all league soph and jr years; leardership award
Spring track - varsity 3 years
State Scholar-athlete award every season

Technology Honor Society - soph year; officer jr year
Math HS, Science HS - jr year
Girls Scholar Athlete Leaders Club - 3 years
Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Award; Gold Award project pending approval

I am worried about her ACT score - she struggles with reading end. I don’t want to discourage her from these schools but I also want to be realistic.

Thank you!

Has your D tried the SAT? Mine did much better on it than ACT- she is stronger math- does not like the reading comprehension parts of testing. ( she also wanted to work on the reading and we invested in private sat tutoring- was a great $300 investment- her scores went up significantly. She plans to major in chemical engineering and has been accepted into Villanova ( EA) - she is awaiting Lafayette, Lehigh, our state school…Her ACT was 29, her SAT was 1510 (3rd attempt)

Congrats to your daughter! She feels she is stronger on the ACT Than the SAT so for now we are concentrating on that. She had a tutor who was solely working on the grammar and science portions so we are now searching for someone who will help her with the reading.

Reading is harder to improve than the Science and Math section, unfortunately. However, more practice would still help.
