Chance my daughter

For Early Action:

IB student, taking all available IB courses in program.
Straight A's throughout high school, including all pre-IB and IB courses. At or very near top of class.
SAT: 1260 (reading & math). (This is the one area of concern. She has never done as well on standardized tests as compared to her course grades. Her grades show that she is a very diligent student in the toughest curriculum available at her school.)

Any thoughts?

Are you in state? If so, where in GA are you? Does your school send many kids to UGA? For metro Atlanta students, especially for schools that have a lot of applicants for UGA, a 1260 is low. They usually want to see more like at least a 1350 or better. If, however, you are in a rural area that doesn’t send many kids to UGA, that may amke a difference. Good luck.

Interesting. With guaranteed admission in spring for val. or salut., which is what she’s on track for at her current stats, yet she doesn’t look good for EA?

Yes, she’s in suburban Atl., but I don’t think many end up at UGA from her H.S.

In any event, I guess we won’t have much longer before we find out one way or another!

Thats a good question. Yes, they guarantee admission for val and sal, so if your HS counselor’s recommendation letter says that she is likely to get val/sal (assuming no catastrophe this year) then hopefully they’ll accept EA and offer an invitation to the Honors program. When my s’s were in their sr yrs of HS several yrs ago (private Atl HS) they were told UGA expects 1350+ SATs. Neither s applied to UGA, so I can’t tell you for sure. One applied to Tech and got in early, but went elsewhere. Good luck! Keep us posted.

I think she will be accepted EA. UGA puts a lot of emphasis on rigor of curriculum and in my opinion there is nothing more rigorous than IB. One daughter is in IB now and my other daughter did IB and is in UGA Honors now. If she is deferred, she will get in regular decision when EC’s and essays and recommendations are considered. She may want to take the ACT
or SAT again to increase her chances of getting in honors. I think the Honors program is best if you have done IB although some IB students from our school were not in it. UGA is
also generous with credit on IB and AP exams so it is very worthwhile to do well on them.

jym626,
You’re spreading a UGA urban legend!

Alumnus,
GPA & rigor of curriculum are the two most important factors in admission for UGA (which your d has) with test scores less of a factor. She looks good for EA.

^^^^ No, I am sharing what our HS college counselors, very familiar with the admissions process, have told us year in and year out. I did not say this is locked in stone, I said, repating ver batim what the counselors have seen and know from this process, that UGA likes to see around a 1350 on SATs. Of course a student’s academic course rigor and performance will be part of the review process.

on the UGA freshman profile only the top 25% got above a 1350. I know plenty of people who got in early with 1200s and good GPAs in Atlanta.

And we know of many who were deferred with 1200s.

alumnus,
You may want to look at this link, particularly the Wednesday Oct. 21st blog.
[Advice about the UGA Admission Process](http://ugaadmissions.blogspot.com/)

1350 is too generous… i would say 1200+ will easily get you in if the rest of your application is strong…i know plenty of people that go to UGA …one specifically made a 1180(math, reading) and a 1740 overall and he got in…he had a rigorous courseload and high GPA…there is no quota for standardized test scores…so your counselor may want to reconsider his advisement…of course UGA would like to see 1350+…but the majority of those students will be applying to Emory ect. …as illysa states…only 25% of students score above 1350…according to collegeboard…the middle 50% = 1690-1980. those numbers maybe outdated…but a rough estimate nonetheless.

Result: She was admitted EA!

i was excepted early with a 1260 and not as high of a GPA as your daughter probably has.

Congrats to your daughter  With straight A’s and that GPA, I would’ve said she would probably get in EA.

For future reference, I got in EA with 1170, 4.0, 3 AP’s and 2 joint enrollment classes.

JenMarie

How many AP courses does your school offer and what is your GPA?

UGA heavily weighs GPA and rigor of schedule – as measured by what a school offers.

I probably should’ve mentioned I got in 2ish years ago (I graduated high school 2007).

At the time, I had AP US History, AP Bio, and AP English Lang (I passed all three tests with a 4, 4, and 3 respectively, but they wouldn’t have known my AP Bio score at the time). I didn’t take AP Government, AP Psych, AP Calculus AB/BC (I was only in precalc my senior year), and AP Chem. They offered AP English Lit, but I decided to do joint enrollment instead (I took freshman english through the community college). My GPA during high school was 4.0UW. I also took honors Spanish 3, honors chem, honors physics (I did AP Bio and honors physics the same year), and honors precalc (I didn’t take honors bio, but that’s for those who do bio a year earlier…if you take bio when everyone else does, there’s no honors option, or honors Spanish 4).

I also took 2 SAT subject tests for another school, but I got a 620 on US History and 650 on Bio. For my regular SAT, I got 620V, 550M, 570W.
