I have been hearing a lot about how you need an extracurricular that is considered a “spike” so I was wondering if mine wouls be considered one. My city had a transportation problem and because of that many people got into accidents and some of them even got killed because of it. With some of my peers, I pitched an idea of a map app to my city and they accpeted it and will fund our app over the summer and my team will also get a paid internship over the summer. So, can y’all just tell me if this activity would be look well or not ?
It would look good but it’s just another extracurricular like joining a club or random volunteer work. A spike is the proof of some talent or ability you have, like if you are a good writer and you proved it through your popular city magazine or some writers award and other writing activities.
The previous poster is not correct, in my view. This is not at al like a usual extracurricular like joining a club or doing volunteer work. Depending on the circumstances, this may show a real technological skill, creativity, iniitiative and involvement at a high level with your community.
Was it part of a class assignment? How did you and your peers end up doing this? Did you play a big role yourself or was this a class project in which you tailed along?
I would recommend considering a letter of recommendation from someone in the city or a supervisor of the project to back up any claim you make with this…
In the meantime, make sure you don’t live your life for admissions I am sure that admissions was not on your mind when you created this app.
It sounds like a very interesting undertaking. What you actually accomplish and how you present it will be important. And agree with the above that if you do something really great ask for a letter of recommendation from your supervisor. But do keep in mind that while admissions to top colleges is holisitc, that academics are of paramount importance so make sure they are strong and in line with the school you apply to. Unless you have a specific hook (ex. recruited athlete) no EC will make up for sub-par academics (I’m not commenting on your academics which I know nothing about – I’m just putting this out as a general statement).
Your map ap is a terrific public service that will be a nice entry on your EC list. Recently, there has been considerable discussion of the perfect hookish EC. Please remember that calends calends involve activities that are personally rewarding and challenging and provide insight into an applicant’s talents, artistic or athletic participation, interests, social and academic pursuits and so on. ECs are what put a face on me that is different from other applicants. There are no ECs that guarantee admission outside of or more important than grades, test scores, letters of rec and other requirements that provide some assurance that an applicant is prepared to succeed at a particular SCHOOL.
Thus, rather than attempting to find the golden ring of ECs, develop a profile that reflects you clearly. While you are at it, work on time management, study skills, industry, reading facility and comprehension, and other attributes and skills that will enable you to progress in school and life.
