What are her chances? How can she improve her app?

i’ve never met a meteorology major at cornell…would be interesting to know how many of those they admit :-d

oops, sorry. i think the official title is ‘atmospheric science.’

lol ok so maybe i’ve met one of those ;x

I think you have excellent shot considering your choice of major. You’re NHS, which will give you a boost in your application!!!

Good luck!!!

She may want to improve your ACT score (sounds good that you’re going to retake it.) Her GPA needs a little work, but there’s nothing you can do about that now. Take a look into other schools, and make sure you secure the rest of your application materials on time.

lol I am a recent graduate of CALS with a major in atmospheric science. Your friend has a good chance, but the major is quite small (around 15 students per year). That being said it was a great department in CALS, and she should not worry, no reason to stress out about things out of your control…

I applied atmospheric science last year, and was given a guaranteed transfer. They only accepted 8 and gt’d 2-3. I had a 31 ACT, 4.0 w. gpa (we didnt have unweighted, and with that weighted avg. your friend has, she should be in top 5% right?), I was top 4/5%, and had TONS of extracurriculars, and NHS doesnt do s#% for your app. unless you’re really into it, like president. I was a urm and first- generation, and my essays were great. Only thing they found wrong with me (or only thing the guy i met in admissions and kept in contact with) was that my school’s science/math dept. was weak, and they werent sure I would be able to walk in and do well in those awful into classes. So they gave me a GT, which was really reasonable, and I wouldnt change a thing. I cannot emphasize HOW competitive this major is, it is not an easy one to get into! I used to think that but accepting 8-11/100+ applications, all with similar stats, is less than a 10% admit rate. I got all these numbers from my pal who is one of the 3 adcoms PLEASE tell her to show her passion for weather in her supplemental essay, and an inspirational story in her commonapp essay. If I didnt spend a month writing those, I don’t think I would be going to Cornell next year. Best of luck, from what I hear and have seen, Cornell atmos. sci is the best program, both academically and socially, in the nation. If you’re friend has any other questions, feel free to pm me :)

P.s- Jimbo if you don’t mind could you please private message me? I have a bunch of questions about electives and cores for the major, but your private message option is turned off.

I’m sorry to use your thread wmmk!
