Chance my friend; he's freaking out.

He won't stop worrying after submitting the UC app even though I tell him to relax because he can't do anything about it now. What do you guys think so he either is more reassured or is he correct in panicking?

Unweighted GPA: 3.74
UC uncapped Weighted GPA: 4.44 (All honors and AP student; top 10%)
SAT1: 1900 (I think his ACT is better)
ACT: 30
SAT2:
730 M Bio
700 Lit

Respectable ECs, nothing amazing, nothing subpar either, 4 year athlete also.

Should he worry?

He shouldn’t worry too much, but he has a okay to good shot of getting in. I would just say that the unweighted GPA is a little low (especially since UCLA puts a lot of weight in admissions decisions on it). But, other than that he should be fine. (This is all assuming he is a California resident)

I would say he is borderline. My son’s stats were about the same (although unweighted/weighted GPA was higher and he was ELC (top 4%) and team captain etc… and what we did was assume he wasn’t going to get in, and then when he was accepted we were thrilled. Rather than assume he would be accepted and then possibly be disappointed.

He took the December SAT2 and scored a 730 in US history so now he has sent that in place of lit so his two best are slightly better. Does that change anything at all?

I’d panic.

its a 50-50.

ask him to pray to God :D

Gold3N, is your friend in a CA public school and ELC (top 4%)? If he is, then he has a good chance.

The 730 USH helps only slightly, but I don’t think it would be the determining point for an acceptance/rejection. I would say 60% chance.

yes he is from a california public school but not ELC top 4% unfortunately he just missed it at 6% I think.

I told him about a 50/50 chance as well, but he has alright EC’s but most experts told him that UC’s barely skim over essays and EC’s/non transcript factors so he was dismayed greatly.

Oxymoron?..

Is there even a point to the uncapped GPA? I’m pretty sure they only consider UC capped. It is mostly a numbers game but UCLA and Cal will also take ECs and personal statement more into consideration than the other UCs, since they claim to use a holistic review of the applicant.

I found this on the UC Berkeley thread. It is a study that details how Berkeley does their admission process and I think UCLA is pretty similar. It is really long but towards this end it details which EC’s count for more etc… It might help your friend understand the process. http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/r...houtreport.pdf

either you gave me the wrong link or it just doesn’t work. If it’s a pdf file and for some reason I can’t see it you can email it to me:

Also, I personally talked to the UCLA adcom, the lady that reads all the apps for UCLA, and she said that UCLA uses the uncapped UC gpa not the 8 point limit to calculate admissions and hinted Berkeley does the same but only confirmed UCLA when I asked her. It makes perfect sense and I believe her because there’s no way the weighted GPA average of UCLA students is 4.37 with only a 8 point cap. They’d all have to be valedictorians to have such a high average so to answer the question, no it’s not an oxymoron since UCLA, pretty sure Berkeley as well, use the uncapped UC weighted GPA for admissions.

OK, sorry, here is a link to the summary of the study with a link to the whole report on the bottom of the page.
