He’s a better writer than I am, so I’m pretty sure he’ll be able to write a better one. I have no clue what he intends on writing about though…

He’s a well liked guy, and teacher/guidance counselor recommendations will be as good as they come.

He doesn’t really know what he wants at this point, but this is his cursory list:
Yale (possibly SCEA)
Princeton
MIT
Dartmouth
Columbia
Brown
JHU
UPenn
WUSTL
Rochester
Tufts
Willams

Wow, nice looking app. Only possible thing that might hinder him are the mediocre (for those schools) ACTs and SATs. Maybe he could retake if he wanted. Then again, people are admitted with those scores and higher scores don’t guarantee admission.

I think he should stand a good chance at all of them. I would think he’d be in at: JHU, Rochester, Tufts, and probably Williams. Yale, P, MIT will be tough. Columbia, Brown will be a bit less tough, but I think he’d still stand a good chance!

Good luck to him! I’m going to be helping my brother (HS '13, college '17) as well!

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention that, as of now, he’s going to be pre-med. So for all those schools that have some type of BS/MD program, he’ll to those.

And he has an older brother at JHU who will have graduated by the time he’s a freshman and another one at Brown (moi :D) who will be a Junior when he’s a Freshman.

BUMP!

He’s an overrepresented minority from an overrepresented area, that already puts him at a disadvantage.

His scores are a bit low for some of the schools, find out which. He may or may not choose to retake them, but they are not bad scores by any means.

His grade/rank is legit.

Summer school programs don’t have much weight on them, they can help you learn/broaden your learning experience, or maybe they’re just fun, but mostly they are cash cows for colleges whose parents think they will help their kids get into any college. Though, I have to ask, if you are low income of 50,000 or less, how could you afford to go to those?

In addition, almost anything that has the terms “honor society” in it carry no weight. mostly because the standards aren’t universal, and most of the time they are pretty low, and they are quite easy to get into with little prerequisites.

his clubs and ECs are quite scattered, I don’t really see much of a pattern or passion. Class office is decent (and he stayed with it for multiple years), quiz bowl is ok I guess (though, I don’t know alot about this), mathletes is good I guess, and marching band is too. The rest seem forced. Although clubs like “ping pong club”, etc, clubs which don’t serve athletically, leaderwise/career relating, academically, or the community, aren’t really well looked upon from my experience.

I don’t think a community band constitutes as community service. What did he do? Otherwise this part looks normal.

And then some awards, which are good, but not special by any means.

Yale (possibly SCEA)- high reach
Princeton- high reach
MIT-reach (but because he has some good science/math scores, and a bit of a passion for it, I say a bit better than a reach)
Dartmouth- reach
Columbia- reach
Brown PLME (since you said he was interested in pre med/BS)- rejected
Brown- low reach
JHU- match
UPenn- reach
WUSTL- reach
Rochester- match
Tufts- match
Willams- reach

Get some safeties on there. I know someone who was president of a state organization (DECA), had several other leadership positions, founded their school’s key club and ping pong club, helped managae a business website, great grades/test scores, was a state-competitor swimmer, etc, and he got rejected from Yale, Columbia, U penn, Stanford, and waitlisted at CMC. He got into his safety only. He was also asian and low income, and from a bit less represented area (PNW).

Yale (possibly SCEA) - Reach
Princeton - Reach
MIT - Reach
Dartmouth - Lower Reach
Columbia - Lower Reach
Brown - Reach (incredibly popular)
JHU - Match for sure
UPenn - reach
WUSTL - I disagree with poseidenj and think this is a match
Rochester - match
Tufts - almost a safety
Willams - reach

Add UMichigan or UCB maybe? And a safety or two would be wise. And perhaps bump up the ACT or SAT just a bit.

Chance me back?
