Sorry to cause misunderstanding. She is my BFF. I’m the only child in my family, but I view her as my sister. Really sorry.

Do you Americans always speak in such a manner? You can ask me about those things, but your tone only makes it sound like God. Words are piercing. I am sorry for the unclear part, and you really hurt me.

Many students come to these boards and post multiple speculative profiles, filled with “projected” test scores and imaginary ECs. It gets tiresome. Your post about your “sister” looked very much like yet another of those. Sybbie was blunt but she wasn’t insulting.

There are cultural differences with which you will have to cope if you choose to go to another country. For example, I have spent time in cultures where people never want to say “no.” If you ask them if they can do something for you, they will say “yes,” but have no intention of ever following through. To most North Americans, this makes them look at best undependable and at worst dishonest. We expect that if a person commits to do something, that they will follow through. We expect that if a person knows they cannot do something, they will simply and honestly say so. If you are so thin-skinned perhaps you should stay at home. Starting off with remarks about “you Americans” is not the way to approach life in a different country.

Why do you want to go to college here? Why not stay in China?

You have good stats, but I don’t see anything particularly outstanding in your description that would make you an obvious admit, whether American or international. I would also suggest that you look into taking the TOEFL, which most schools require of non-native English speakers.

As for your BFF, if she wants to apply to D she had better take some SATIIs.

Sorry, sybbie719. I was waiting to receive evaluation about my BFF, but unexpectedly, reading your message made me uncomfortable. I didn’t intend to post any impolite words. Sorry. I am envious of you guys. The States has a wonderful education system. You are so lucky to live in such a country. I’m of little importance; please chance my SISTER.
Thank you all.

She needs to take two SAT II.
Or else I assume they will simply turn to the other 25000 applicants who have met the requirements.

Because her situation is not your situation, I think what you need to do is pass the CC link on to your BFF, let her set up her own account and let her ask her own questions.

One of the most important skills a young person needs to learn is how to advocate for themselves and how to ask for what they want/need. If she is uncomfortable doing this, which should be part of her due diligence in researching and selecting schools, how is she going to manage taking care of her business in another country?

The problem with these “chances” posts are that there is no simple formula Dartmouth uses to select applicants. Every effort is made to make every incoming class the smartest, but also most well-rounded. That is why the admissions process is so complicated. If Dartmouth could just take the top 1000 SAT scores, there wouldn’t need to be such an involved application process.

That said, I think that the more your sister/you/anyone else can bring to the table in a variety of different aspects (athletics, GPA, SAT, job experiences, life experiences, nationality), the better chance you or anyone will have. In my opinion, someone who has a perfect SAT score, but nothing else will be less likely to get in than someone who has ok scores and grades, job experience, and interesting unique abilities.

Maybe things have changed, but my earlier life experience with college admissions in Taiwan and Japan may explain some of the culture clash here. There (an then), admissions were exclusively determined by entrance exams; based on exam results (and I guess some factor of societal needs) students were assigned not only a college placement, but their major as well. In these very homogeneous societies, the idea of diversity on campus was irrelevant. The American approach to crafting the ideal mosaic doesn’t compute.

Actually, these days it seems that neither of the above will have much chance of getting in to D and the other highly selective schools.

The kids who get in will have the grades AND the scores AND the recs that say they are outstanding AND characteristics/activities that show that they will contribute to campus life.

Sorry guys, Chinese internationals are not all like her. Most of them are very friendly and honest. She is a very rare exception. :)
