He just submitted his application this weekend (not early decision) and is taking the SAT one last time in October hoping to increase his critical reading score. Here's his story.

I was just looking at stats for entry. I’m going to bet yes. If they don’t take someone with his stats who DO they take? You must be proud. Just be sure he applies to some safeties.

Yeah, we’re pretty happy with him, think we’ll keep him Appreciate your comments.

My gut certainly tells me that if he can’t get in then who does, but our real concern is that his SAT is at the “average” for the last class, and in a meeting we had with someone in the engineering department and the corps of cadets last summer, they indicated that they don’t like to see a big spread between Math and Critical Reading scores. He’s concerned enough that he’s taking the SAT again in October, but feels like he’s hit the wall on improving his CR score. So I’m really just looking for some opinions from some people who might have gotten in or know people who have gotten in with similar scores. Just something to try to bring him down off the edge.

jhoelscher…thanks for the input! I know he’s right around average, but I think he feels he should be above average to feel better about his chances. Still hoping for a bump in critical reading in October.

I don’t think it’s that unusual for engineering/comp sci students to have high Math SATs with lower CR SAT scores. I I don’t remember the exact SAT scores of my two sons attended VT. One definitely had a similar spread in scores as your son and he’s currently in the Honors program.

Agree with @ChrisTKD…My son, currently a Senior ME major, had even a bigger spread. Math 760 / Reading 600. He was accepted ED Engineering when he applied.

I truly think your son will get in, but I will relay a complete and total anomaly: last year from our VA high school a NM FINALIST (Just under 2400 composite for SATs) and a very fine athlete was waitlisted for VT engineering. It was a huge blow. He didn’t wait, and is now enrolled with scholarship at a private university that ranks leagues above VTs.
