@midclassdad … I think your sons chances are very good.

Thanks for replying. We are all at dark, particularly as OOS applicant.

I thought I’d let you know my son with very similar stats got in…except your son has significantly more community service. We’re also out of state (PA). Good luck!

Yes, I think your son has a good chance. My son’s stats were also similar, and he got in. He’s from Maine.

annieschris and MaineLonghorn, thanks for your information. Your son’s admission was for this year or they are already students going to cockrell?

@midclassdad It was for fall 2015 as an incoming freshman.

anniechris, Thanks. That is interesting. When did he get admission letter? recently?

Also, my son completed his application process towards end of November. Don’t know whether it has any effect.

@midclassdad He submitted the application on October 30 and was notified December 15. I don’t know why it was so quick…I know someone else in his school with excellent stats that hasn’t heard yet.

anniechris,
That is good. I think when application is submitted early, it is treated differently. We did not know about submitting that early as my son was waiting for his latest SAT scores. Anyways, thanks for sharing the info and congrats on your son’s admission.

@midclassdad I think UT looks at best fit for major more than application date. Outstanding rank, GPA, test scores (compared to others) and major related EC’s seem to get admitted in the first waves. I don’t know if a school that does not rank delays acceptance of similar applicants.

Also chem engineering is one of the hardest majors to be accepted into at UT because of the limited spots and also it is a highly ranked major. ECE seems easier to get into (it’s a larger program, but also highly ranked).

Three years ago my older son was accepted into his major ECE within a week. However I think that in the past 2 years it has become much harder to get into UT engineering.

EventHorizon32,

As anniechris mentioned that my son’s statistics are similar to her’s, I thought it is timing. My son has very good recommendations too. AP scholar, commended student so on and so forth with decent SAT scores. Two college courese one in math and other in physics sponsored by school.

If not his first choice, may be second choice as it is a larger program. Also, being out of state, it is a proper comparison as OOS has less spots.

Thanks for your response.

@midclassdad I did read both of your stats. Your son does have good stats and I hope he gets his first choice.

I was just stating how engineering admissions have recently become much more difficult at UT even for kids with great stats. Some majors like chem and biomedical engineering get many top stat applicants and UT probably looks to create a diverse class. So in addition to the very best stats from the group that apply for that major who knows what else adcoms are looking for. For Texas A&M timing for getting majors matters. For UT it’s best fit for major+ (imo).

EventHorizon32,

You are very right. My son ended up getting admission in May’s business school(his second choice) instead of engineering in Texas A&M college station as he applied same time as he did for UT Austin. Glad to here time of application do not matter in UT Austin.

As you mentioned it could be diversity. May be too many applicants from NY.

Also, I just now talked to admissions. They say that applications are distributed among so many people to be reviewed. whoever got reviewed first gets their admissions and that is the reason for admission in batches.

If all the applications are not reviewed in parallel, how can they choose the best? I have no idea. Anyways, this is their story as to why admissions are going in batches and according to them it will continue until March 1st.

We applied in Oct, have not heard back.

calspeed,

I understand. Waiting is difficult. I too don’t understand their selection process in entirety. Let us keep our fingers crossed. Atleast by March 1st each one of us should know.

We live in TX. My son qualifies for automatic admission to UT, but had to apply to Cockrell. He also applied to the honors program, Chem engineering and petroleum engineering, first and second choices. He has great test scores, class rank, GPA, plays a sport, etc etc!! The waiting is making me crazy!! We were told at a college night no decisions are made until after DEC 1 when everything was due. Guess that’s not the case! Much luck to everyone!! Hoping we all don’t have to wait until March 1!! Hook 'em horns!! \m/

@TXMOOH‌

As I mentioned, I could not understand their reason behind why somebody takes time and why somebody with similar scores get early. There should be some internal criteria, which I could not have a grasp of.

Hope waiting is over soon one way or other.
