I appreciate any advice or suggestion.

What is concerning you? Your absolutely best info will come from your own school’s guidance office. They probably have quite abit of experience with kids heading to Ann Arbor. Here’s the link to the common data set and you’ll see the data on last year’s kids which might help also.

[Office of Budget & Planning: Common Data Set](<a href=“Office of Budget and Planning”>Office of Budget and Planning)

Since he is in a very big HS, school counselor has very little information and little time for each student. They usually just tell you that some students with ACT 34 were rejected or so.

Since UofM is my son’s target school, that makes me extra concern. I am not sure if it is a risk to apply CoE.

Son is a match

Go Blue!!!

Your son’s stats look very similar to mine, same ACT score (including higher math subscore), comparable GPA, similar amount of extracurricular involvement, etc. Said son is currently a freshman at Michigan College of Engineering, majoring in Computer Science. I’d say your son’s a match.

His closest friend is one of those kids with a 34 ACT (and a National Merit Finalist) who was rejected, but his GPA was a bit lower, around a 3.5. Also he did very little with extracurricular activities.

He will get in.

I think he applies to LSA is safer than CoE. His GPA was over 3.9 up to the end of first semester. But he was sick for almost 3 weeks the beginning of the second semester. He has worked very hard to catch up and get mostly 5 on his AP exams.

Do you think add this description to “Additional Information” will help to explain that he is not academically trend down in 11th grade. Or do you think add such description will not help at all and even make things worse?
His transcript does have attendance records. His counselor was in extensive leave for new born baby since this semester. He did ask his substitute counselor to explain his sickness in counselor’s letter. But she doesn’t want to do anything special for students, except for a template file to submit, I guess.

I wouldn’t worry so much.

Don’t think it is necessary. Strong match.

If your son is interested in computer science he should apply to COE (LSA’s CS program is not as well regarded and not as well recruited as COE’s). The COE’s academic program is very rigorous, but it sounds like your son has what it takes to succeed.

I graduated HS Class of 2008. Several of my friends got into LSA Honors and COE with similar statistics to your son’s. Same school (Go Chiefs!), comparable GPA, comparable ACT/SAT scores, comparable extracurricular involvement, and comparable AP scores. I also have friends that graduated PCEP more recently than me with much worse statistics than your son whom were admitted to COE.

My only advice is that it is better to apply sooner rather than later. I believe I applied early September and had my admission decision by late October. Is there a reason your son hasn’t applied yet?

I thought the deadlin is 11/1, and the application will not be processed before all the applications for EA are received by the college. I was wrong or your case was 5 years ago situation? I thought apply as earlier as 9/1 has the same chance as apply 10/31, but different from apply 11/2, was I wrong?

Well, just best wishes to HIM and less worries from mom, LOL

Thanks all of you for your nice comments.

By the way, he applied to LSA. Part of the reason is that he is planning to do CS major and also try pre-med. I thought if he changes mind later and is determine for CS and work hard on it, it is not that hard to transfer from LSA to CoE as I read some of the threads here.

Yes, you can transfer from LSA to COE fairly easily (and avoid taking some annoying first-year COE classes to boot!). The intro level EECS department (electrical engineering and computer science) classes are available to LSA students, so your son should have no trouble taking EECS classes as an LSA student and transferring them to COE if he chooses to major in CS.

I applied to U of M before we accepted the Common Application. In those days everyone applied via rolling admission, so it was to your advantage to submit your application ASAP. The deadlines for submission and application must have changed since I applied. I’m sure you know more about the deadlines than I do.

lol I’m almost certain that this is PCEP… I go there. Your son has a great chance by the way.
