Chance My Son, Please

<p>Son a junior in excellent public high school in MA. Has a 4.7 weighted GPA (out of 6.0) -- have no idea how this translates on the 4.0 scale but he is a B student, having taken 3/4 of his classes at the Advanced level. Will take 3 APs next year (Bio, Stats, Latin); President of Latin Club; varsity golf and crew; few other clubs at school throughout high school and has done a bit of volunteering.</p>

<p>School doesn't rank but he's in top 30% (75/260).</p>

<p>SATs: 700M, 620CR, 520W -- will take again in June. How much does the Writing section actually count?</p>

<p>Also, not applying for financial aid -- does this even matter?</p>

<p>Anyone out there with honest opinion would be most appreciated! Thanks.</p>

<p>I think his SAT is fine, in terms of math + reading (I don't know how much they really count writing). Not sure how his GPA translates on a standard 4 point scale.</p>

<p>I thought they didn't look at writing. Could change next year though, as more and more schools are accepting it.</p>

<p>For this year, they aren't looking at writing -- although a good writing score might help you, they specifically said a bad writing score won't hurt you.</p>

<p>Typically UMCP only takes 30% OOS. His class rank is pretty low, his SAT's are good, except for writing. His gpa would convert to @ 3.0. </p>

<p>Place everything in an analytical situation. They had 28K applicants this year for 4K slots. @1100 were OOS. </p>

<p>My suggestion is to look at the accepted threads to see ho he ranks.</p>

<p>Definetly go for it, but try to get his written SAT up.</p>

<p>What everybody said was on point. I think his SAT score are ok, hoping they imprpove. Maybe he should try out the ACT and see if he scores really high there. Its good he has extra c's. Its good he's taking AP classes...but it will all come down to the admission people to determine if they want him</p>

<p>I had a 3.71 high school GPA and a 1650 on my SAT (1140, CR+M) and I got in :P</p>

<p>The thing that is going to kill him is his class rank. maryland tends to only accept top 10%-20% from OOS. In state is a different story because they have quotas to fil so a minority can get in with a much lower SAT or GPA. I know in state residents who got in with 1400s in the 3 sections.</p>

<p>Here are my stats (by the way I transferred to UM)
High School Stats:
-3.75 GPA UW, 4.2 W
-99/540; top 18th percentile; special circumstances for this (n reality GPA W shoulde be 4.4 which would bring me into the top 12%-top 13%; had to drop 3 APs junior year for serious matters)
-1250 SAT, 28 ACT</p>

1st sem: 3.48= approx. 3.5 GPA</p>
