Two of the seniors in my son's high school received the early notification for admission at Fordham yesterday, so naturally, it was a bit unnerving for my son whose first choice is Fordham. He applied EA. With his stats, is there a possibility of being deferred to RA?

Here are his stats:
Attends rigorous, college prep, Jesuit high school in Washington state.
High school does not rank / approximately 250 senior class

ECs: Marching band /(1st alto sax) wind ensemble 4 yrs, (1st tenor sax) jazz band 3 yrs, Faith in Formation /UrbanPlunge/Encounter/retreat leader 3 yrs, spent a week in New Orleans to help rebuild homes for Katrina victims, various community service hours...

AP: World Hist, US Hist, Physics B,
Calc (senior yr), Physics C (senior yr), British Lit (senior yr), Psychology (senior yr)

URM - Hispanic/Filipino
National Hispanic Recognition Program

Very good recommendation letters from English & Physics professors.
Applying at RH campus for B.A. Physics leading into the 3/2 engineering program.

Your son still has a chance of getting early admission to Fordham as those letters will not be mailed until sometime in mid-December. Although it probably seems like “everyone” got the early notification email, I think those only went to really high stats kids (Ivy caliber or National Merit Finalists). He has geographic diversity and a fairly unusual major at Fordham with decent grades and scores. Good luck!

We just got the mail today. My S got deferred. Fordham is his absolute first choice.

Deferrals come for many reasons. Sometimes highly qualified applicants slip through the cracks. I would convey that Fordham is his absolute first choice. Every year weird things happen (at Fordham and elsewhere). The RD pool is yet to be seen. I am sorry for those with stellar stats and got deferred, particularly if it is your first choice.

He is in at several excellent schools. So relax. Kids are plucked off the deferral list in the RD pool every year.

Its an imperfect system. Fordham is a white hot school and is going to break into the top 50 colleges likely this year. So its extremely competitive.

College admissions are strange and sometimes this happens. Doesn’t make it right, it just is a rude awakening to the process.

Keep the faith, focus on plan B.

But again, they take kids off the deferral list often in the RD pool. Sometimes they fear you will go elsewhere…

Thank you cerulean2 and sovereigndebt. As you can see from his stats, they’re not incredibly stellar, but they do fall within Fordham’s class profile with the exception of his GPA.

A Fordham admissions counselor told my son this morning that 11,000 applicants were deferred from the EA pool. Does anyone know the percentage of admittances from the deferral list?

I don’t know the numbers, but my son was deferred and then got in RD so there is hope. His stats certainly look like they fit well within Fordham’s criteria (and being a URM and from Washington State I would think are positive factors). I wonder if applying to the 3/2 program makes it harder to get into Fordham (I don’t know)? But I agree with sovreigndebt that it would be a good idea to let Fordham know that the school is his fist choice. In the meantime, hopefully some of the disappointment is tempered by knowing that he has other truly outstanding offers. Good luck going forward.

windows: I think frankly he stands a very good chance of being admitted in the RD pool. I dont know how many Fordham selected this round and if they had 11,000 deferrals that is a HUGE number. They had 31,000 applications last year and it looks like they are on course to exceed that this year. So please don’t lose hope. Submit this semester’s grades and a letter from another counselor to STRONGLY recommend him and also his own letter stating “its his first choice and if selected he will attend.”

I have to say, that even 4 or 5 years ago he would have been a slam dunk admission. Times have changed as the applicant pools grows in number and quality and as Fordham rockets up the USNWR rankings. The price of success.

He has been admitted to great schools. So just relax. Its all going to work out. But do your best to convey to Fordham where you stand. Your case tells me they were overwhelmed with unbelievable applicant stats this year. Its truly a white hot school.

Did you apply to LC or Rose Hill? If you tell them that you will accept at either location, that will help as well. Rose Hill has more dorm space. Larger class.

Thanks sovereigndebt and happy1.
My S got accepted RD from the deferred pool. The financial aid/scholarships did not come with the acceptance letter, but there is info online on the My.Fordham.edu that lists a Jogues Scholarship and some grant-in aid. We’re waiting for the written notification of the financial aid package.

Thank you sovereigndebt for the words of encouragement. You have been very beneficial to this forum.

windows! Delighted! I am happy for him and for you! Congratulations and welcome to the Fordham family. I sincerely hope he accepts the offer of admission.

Glad to hear Window’s son got in finally. My son was admitted EA and was very thankful for that. FA just arrived today and it’s now competitive with all the other Jesuits, so he’s dizzy with great choices. Those of you who are choosing Fordham over the rest of your options, why?

Are financial aid packages for non-Catholics generally less generous than to those who are Catholic? I notice the poster above me referenced a pattern in Jesuit institutions. Fordham is the only Catholic school my daughter applied to, and her package was much lower than at other colleges, including schools that are more academically selective.

Its not a discriminatory policy to be certain. But there are scholarship resources for Catholics, particularly Jesuit Prep Schools, which can enhance the situation. In my opinion Fordham’s financial aid department is not one of the University’s strengths…and can be annoying at times. My kid is Catholic and went to a public high school and we noticed a better package for kids who went to catholic high schools…it just is what it is. Fordham is not known for being incredibly generous.

Some schools…many schools…use financial aid as a fishing lure to bring kids in…and Fordham also knows its yield from admitted students will be around 15% of the admitted student pool.

Had your kid been, e.g. Presbyterian and attended a Jesuit High School, I bet the aid/scholarship would be precisely on par with other kids from Jesuit High Schools.

Private colleges do this much more than state schools which have severe regulations and tend to focus more on “diversity” and “giving aid to those who are very poor”, plus lower tuition for state schools.

In other words at private colleges like Fordham there is not one set objective formulaic standard of who gets what based on EFC.

Fordham gaps a lot of people. Been there, done that. In the end, you have to decide what is the best for your kid, what you can afford and what you are willing to pay for.

What are the other schools your kid got into and which are competing with Fordham? Did you inform financial aid (appeal the decision) of your competing offers (in a nice but firm manner?)
