Hello. I have two separate “chances” mainly because you are asking two different questions. As far as being admitted goes, I’d say you have an above average chance, i’d say 65-70%, because you are in-state and your ACT is right within Chapel Hill’s range, and your class rank is quite impressive. However, as far as the Morehead-Cain Scholarship is concerned, I cannot say the same for your chances. If you look at the scholarship profiles for prestigious scholarships at UNC such as the Morehead and Robertson, you will find a wide, wide variety of states and countries around the world. In essence, while being in state works to your advantage for admission, looking at scholarship profiles strongly suggests this does not apply for scholarships. And to be completely frank with you, your son’s profile is well below average for a Morehead Cain Scholar. For example, my good friend was nominated for the Morehead. He has a 1580 SAT on the 1600 scale, a 36 act superscored, a 3.95 unweighted GPA, and a 5.7 weighted. He has 23 AP classes, is a National Merit Semifinalist. He is also the president of his class, a national speech and debate qualifier, president of the NHS, is the captain of the basketball team, and founded his own company. You get my drift? These are the kinds of people you’re up against for Morehead Cain, so I would saw your chances of getting Morehead are quite low.
Very helpful information. Thanks for taking time to reply!
