Chance my son?

UF is starting to be very selective with its admissions. Much harder than when I attended. Will you guys chance my son? He is a good student but I've heard some horror stories from friends.

His Stats:[ul]
[]SAT: 800 M 800 CR 730 W
[]SAT II: 800 Math2, 800 Physics, 800 Chem
[]GPA: 4.0 UW
[]Classes: He is taking 8 APs this year (has gotten 5's on 9 previous APs)
[li]ECs: He is involved in soccer, piano, math competitions, etc.[/li][/ul]

The main factor that I'm worried about is that he told me he only wrote 2 sentences for his UF essay (to my outrage). Will he be rejected because of this?

I think you shouldn't be too worried. I actually only wrote 2 sentences for my essay also and I was accepted with a 1500 (old scoring). Is he a national merit finalist? I'm convinced it's impossible to get rejected if you have that.

Are you sure that your son wasn't kidding when he said he wrote two sentences? ESPECIALLY, this year, being so competitive, the essay plays a very important role. I'll give you a perfect example. My son attends a very competitve high school in South Florida. Last year, a student with a great GPA, high test scores, etc., did not get in. The Guidance Director of the high school spoke to their contact at UF and found out the reason why the student was rejected. It seems that UF rates the essays on a scale of 1 to 5. The student received a 2. This students parents had no idea as to what the essay was about, and had never asked to read it. Since the student was a great writer, and had won awards for writing, they had assumed it would be perfect. With the competition so keen this year, everything counts. Were his 2 sentences funny or entertaining? Who knows...that might help!

That's just offensive to me that they end up rating essays. Isn't the point of writing them to give you a voice in front of the admissions committee? To demonstrate who you are as a person? Sounds like UF has caught FCAT fever if you ask me, if that's true.

I heard UF gives the overall application a score before it goes to committee. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

No way that kid gets rejected with those stats. I would put money on it.

^ Yeah... while that essay won't help him much, I would be absolutely shocked if he didn't get in. With a 4.0 GAP, and a near perfect SAT, I think he's in without a problem.

i wouldnt be tooo sure about that.

i mean th essay is also supposed to show the level of interest the applicant has. Unless those 2 sentences are "Pulitzer" material, there may be a problem
