What are my chances of acceptance - and of getting an OoS merit scholarship (somewhat close to in-state tuition)?

ACT 34 composite (ENG 33, MAT 34, READ 33, SCI 34)
SAT 1420 (CR+MA) / 2020 (total), <hopefully put="" more="" emphasis="" on="" the="" act="" score="">
GPA 4.5 (W) / 3.7 (UW), 12% in class rank out of a class of ~ 570
Caucasian girl majoring in Bioengineering from OoS (NC)
NHS, Girl Scouts, soccer, and other usual ECs and volunteer work</hopefully>

Thanks in advance.

If everything else in you app is good then you have a fantastic chance. Just submit only your ACT scores, there’s no need for both.

Thanks… I’ve already submitted both (ACT and SAT) -I hope they won’t hold the SAT score against me and just use the ACT. Is UMd pretty good about OoS scholarships? I’m really interested in this school but can’t go unless I get a scholarship of some sort.

I’m pretty sure they will put more emphasis on your higher scores, but even if they favored SAT scores, you wouldn’t have anything to worry about. While there are no guarantees, I think you are a pretty solid admit, and will likely be admitted directly to engineering.

As for OOS merit scholarships, I think you will likely be considered for a Presidential Scholarship which can go up as high as close to 50% tuition for OOS - note I said 50% tuition which does not include room and board.

Bear in mind that merit scholarships at a public university like Maryland will not come close to the merit scholarships offered by private universities. However, the bottom line is that Maryland is not outrageous by comparison to other schools, so even though the scholarships are not as big, the bottom line is still in the same ball park.

Just remember, the best thing you can do to be eligible for special programs and scholarships is to apply by the Nov 1st deadline. Best of luck!
