Chance of acceptance to U of M Law

I had posted this earlier on the U of M thread probably should have posted on Law thread.

I am a Senior at Albion College in Michigan, will graduate in December (3.5 years to complete undergrad)
I am a Double Major History, Anthropology and Sociology with a GPA of 3.85.
I just took the June 2009 LSAT today.
If my score comes in at the mean of my practice tests 161 what are my chances.

The 161 is a little low for U of M will they consider my EC and Letters of recommendation which which will be strong?

President of Fraternity.
Presenter at National Fraternity conferences.
Deans List at Albion.
I have been awarded numerous Honor Society Memberships in my field of study.
Varsity Sport Athlete, Captain.

I am considering completing the LSAT again, dependant on score.

Will Early decision application be of any benefit, I would accept if offered and start in Summer 2010 as a Early Admit.

Thank You

Mentally exhausted from the LSAT today.

As you know, it’s hard to guess until you have your LSAT score back.

Your GPA is good, and applying ED will only help you. So will being a Michigan resident, if you are one. Your extracurriculars and recommendations are fine but nothing special (pretty much everyone who applies has good recommendations, made the Dean’s list, and did something that took up as much time as the fraternity/sports activities you did). Graduating early and double majoring won’t help (in fact, graduating early might hurt you).

I think you have a slim chance, but it’s probably worth applying. If you could get yourself into the upper 160s, your odds would be a lot better.

I agree I will wait and see what my score is.

I understand typically retakes do not improve greatly, unless there was a “issues” on test date. Such as Ill, Late, did not prepare.
Possibly 3 points max, not sure if this is correct.

Would certainly like to attend U of M, for Academic, Professional, and Personal reasons.

Guess I will have decision ( retake, work a year or so while prepping for retake, or attend lower ranked school ) to make 3 weeks or so from now.

Hey, you might end up doing better than you expect–don’t worry too much yet (I know, easier said than done)!

I agree that if you studied hard this time, your score is unlikely to go up too much the next time–only you can decide if it’s worth it to retake (and you don’t have to wait til next year–you could do the Sept. one).

If UM is your dream school, you should certainly apply with whatever score you get. You’re unlikely to get in, but nearly everyone is a long shot at a place like UM and who knows, they might go for you. Your GPA is very good and they’re always looking for more MI residents.

I’m basing my advice on being a recent UM law grad; it’s a great school and definitely worth going if you can. But also on the experience of a good friend whose GPA was similar to yours, from a higher-ranked school, and who had great essays, recommendations, and 3 years of very good work experience before applying. She got a 159 on the LSAT (and sent in a brief addendum explaining that standardized test scores aren’t a good reflection of her abilities, as indicated by her low SAT score and high GPA) but UM didn’t take her, either in the early or regular decision pool. Luckily, another top-30 school did, and (barring getting off the waitlist somewhere else) she’ll go there. So if you are a “splitter” (someone whose GPA qualifies them for very different schools than their LSAT score), make sure to apply to many schools.

Good luck!

Congrats Stacy on your graduation from law school.

and Gabe- From what I have seen, ED seems to help at schools like U Mich, UVA and U Penn. But those kids who were succesful had LSAT’s still within the 25% range (166/167). Being a Mich resident will probably help a bit, but my gut tells me you’ll still need an LSAT score in the mid 160’s.

Good luck.

Stacy congrats on U of M grad!!!

If I retake LSAT it will be in 2010, September is in the middle of Football season, I have little to absolutely no time during season.

I will graduate in December so I will then have time to commit to getting a higher grad if I do not hit the mark this time.

I will apply to Mich. no matter my score unless I bombed which I am positive I did not, I felt pretty good after, just question a few things in my mental review of my test and what I did or did not do.

I have a list of other Reach schools, and schools I am confident I could attend and would be happy to attend. I will apply to all on the list unless I really pulled a big number then it will narrow.
