Hi, I received my second SAT Subject Score today, so I figured it would be a good time to post. My question is, what are my chances of getting accepted to UPenn, and what could i do to bolster my application? Also, I was thinking of applying to Wharton or possibly SEAS. (I would apply for the Jerome Fisher M&T Program, but I know that it is ultra-competitive and my chances are slim.) I will be applying early decision this November.

ACT Composite Score of 33

I have taken the honors courses available to me thus far at my high school, as well as two AP classes (5 on Government, waiting for U.S. History score.) Next year I am rostered for 5 or possibly 6 APs, as well another Honors course. My GPA is a 4.0+. Also, I am ranked 1 out of a class of 998 students.

In terms of extracurriculars, I sing in my school's concert choir and play in the concert band. I have also played in the wind ensemble. I played soccer my freshman year, and have played lacrosse all three years. I am also a varsity co-captain. I was on my school's Hi-Q team this past year as well. I am a member of NHS and my school's Royal Orientation Corp, a club designed to help incoming freshmen. I volunteered with Philadelphia Cares at the Ronald McDonald House as well, and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

Aside from getting letters of recommendation (I am planning to ask one from my AP U.S. History teacher and one from my Calc BC teacher), and writing solid application essays, what am I missing, and how does my overall chance of admission look? Any advice is appreciated.

Impressive class rank. Test scores aren’t outstanding but they aren’t bad. You should have a solid chance, a bit higher if you apply early decision.

I’m gonna be a senior next year too so I don’t really know anything, but I’ll give it a try:
pretty good all around, great class rank, but your extracurriculars seem somewhat random and don’t seem to indicate any academic interest in a particular field of possible future study, so maybe find something that does so

yeaa i was a bit worried about that. I took some engineering electives and did some extracurriculars related to that that I didn’t mention, and i might do FBLA or DECA next year, two business clubs at my school. Thanks for the advice though and good luck with your senior year.

thanks for the advice, and I hope so MadHungarian. Also, how do you show being a good fit? Things like essays, interviews, extracurriculars, etc.? Thanks.

Only sure way to get into an Ivy is through recruitment. How good are you at Lacrosse and can you get recommended by Penn Lacrosse coach? Even if not, you may still want to contact the coach. Sounds like you are in Philly so may be you can drop by.

Yea i’m pretty good at lacrosse (All-county Honorable mention as a Junior - actually a high honor given how amazing lax in my area is). I don’t think I could play for Penn as they’re division 1, but its worth a shot, thanks!

There are two ways to get in. One is that coach uses his/her likely quota to lure the best players but the second is that the coach says they could use you if you make it into the school on your own. So if you are not good enough to get a likely, you might meet the second borderline criterion with a small push.

Penn is a tough school to get into. So you should try to use any small edge you can get.

if it makes any difference i took an sat subject test for physics. i got a 720 (and I self-taught about half of the material since I won’t have electricity and magnetism until second semester). i don’t know if this will distinguish me or anything. plus i’m doing early decision.

Are you actually in a Philadelphia city high school? If so, will you be a candidate for a Mayor’s Scholarship? That also could help. Search elsewhere on this site for discussions about Penn’s need to have enough candidates for this.
