chance of being a finalist? please?

Hello, I am a current junior wanting to apply for questbridge. My family income is <$25,000. My father passed away when i was 6 and since then, ive gained teh title " man of the house" having my first job to help my mom meet ends meet. Besides helping taking care of financial issues, I've provided my services to an international group in london where I helped dyslexic students to read and write. I've also helped other kids with coomunity projects, etc. Also, I've created a foundation for a medical center in Bangladesh with my aunt to help the less fortunate over the summer. I am the founder of a group called " Xcell" in Bangladesh which teaches unfortunate kids to use computers and help educate them. Being from a low income family, I work myself off just to help my family, not only that, but also others around me. My GPA stands at 3.8. Havent taken SATsd but plan on taking it in March. My only desire is to get into Penn. I know my GPA isnt great since I was basically helping my mother with financial issues, helping my sister pay for college and loans, and on top of that tutoring young neighborhood kids from age 5-12. Honestly, do I have a shot to be matched for Penn?

I’d say you have a really good shot at becoming a finalist. I don’t know about your chances of being matched with UPenn, though, since I don’t know much about UPenn’s College Match policy.

thanks fallenangel09… anyone else?

While it will depend some on your SAT and (a lot) on your essays (never too early to start, right!), I think you have a very, very good chance of finalist, and a fair chance at a match (though, even if you aren’t matched, you’ll still have a good chance in RD). Best of luck!

Honestly, the match is highly fickle, and no one can chance you for that, because it is fairly selective and unpredictable. You have an excellent shot at finalist status. A lot of schools only match with URMs and accept other qualified candidates in RD, so don’t worry too much about the match.

The QuestBridge program offers so much more than a match to your first choice school! Yes, fill out that application. You sound like a good candidate. My son was attracted to QuestBridge because his first choice school was a partner school. We figured it was worth it just for that reason alone. He was a finalist, though not matched, and was accepted through RD to another partner school. He is a sophomore at Rice University and LOVING it! QuestBridge opened the door for us. We learned about colleges he never would have thought about applying to on his own. Be open to possibilities that come along your way. Good luck in your college search.

You have a good chance of being a finalist, however we have found that being matched depends more on your race than anything else. We found several of the colleges we applied to posted on their web sites that they use questbridge to increase their " racial diversity".
A bit disappointing if you are not privileged but also not a minority.

Your post really struck me since I’m from bangladesh
I’m also a junior and planning to apply to questbridge… like you, for numerous different reasons in my family, my gpa-frankly-sucks. Its around a 3.6, but my school doesnt calculate GPA or rank. Top NYC public… competitive.

I’m hoping an SAT score of 2250-2300 can make up for it but I really really would like to be a finalist :frowning:
income ~17,000

SATing in march as well :open_mouth: lets hope we both get this…
