I was accepted into the School of Social Work, my second choice. My first choice was psychology (Liberal Arts). I understand the College of Liberal Arts is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) schools, but not everyone who has been accepted will end up going to UT, which means open spots. So, does anyone know how easy/difficult or if it will even be possible for me to change my major? Or if I will be notified if there is an opening?

Good question. My D is wondering the same thing. She was accepted into her second choice school. Happy to be accepted into UT of course, but…

You should be able to transfer majors at orientation. My daughter was an education major and transferred majors at orientation to Undergradute Studies…(because she wanted to be in the communication school and you can’t just transfer into that school…you have to apply. I do not think you have to apply to Liberal Art, but I could be wrong.

There are 3 schools (there may be more) that require an application to tranfer into once you are at UT…they are McCombs, Cockrell, and the Comm school. She was able to transfer into the Comm school in the Spring semester. She had to apply by October of the Fall semester…which included submitting her resume and an essay as well as their required application. She found out she was in the Comm school in January before the Spring semester started.

Thank you so much for responding!

@SWTCAT: Yeah, I think you can change to any major you want in CNS and COLA. So I guess I’ll be doing that at orientation if I am rejected from the 2 honors programs I applied to!

We’re you by chance able to switch into psychology?

Psychology is the one major in COLA that you actually have to apply for an internal transfer into.

What is the procedure for switching majors at Orientation? My daughter also wants to switch to Liberal Arts. Thanks!

liberal arts is an open college which means you can switch into almost any major without having to meet requirements, however psychology is one major within liberal arts that I know does require an application process in order to switch into that particular major.

I have not been to orientation yet, but when I go I guess I will have to talk to my advisor in order to begin the transfer process if i decide to do so!

most other majors in COLA (history, English, etc.) are open, I’m pretty sure, and don’t require an application in order to internally transfer.

dd12345, I believe if your daughter is wanting to switch into one of the open majors, the process is fairly simple at orientation. This is what I have heard

How long would it take to get switch into physcology then?

Psychology*

No one can tell you how long it will take since it’s a major you have to apply for. So even if you finish the requirements quickly you still have to compete against other students to get into the program.
