On my PSATs this year I had a 73 in Math, 71 in Writing, and a 69 in English.

It's probably too early to tell, but I'd like a few opinions. Also, if there is any more info you'd like to know, I'll gladly provide it.

[EDIT] I'm in AP stats this year, next year I'll be taking AP Environmental, AP English 11, and APUSH. I'm not sure about APs for my senior year.

I was 22nd out of a class of approximately 700 last year.

Your chances look good. Maybe pick up a few more ec's. DON'T do stuff just to look good for college. Find one or two things you really care about and can devote time to.

Also, I love to see NC-ers on the site. Where are you from? What school? I'm from Asheville.

Yeah, pick up a few ECs, and stick to them religiously. And...just keep taking hard classes, etc. your schedule should be among the most rigorous your school offers, if not the most.

Your chances look pretty good so far. It might help that you're from NC; about 15% of Duke's students are from NC. I think you should aim for at least a 2220 on the new SAT. As of right now, you're hovering around the cutoff for National Merit (around 213-216 for NC), so that could also help you. If available, I think you might want to take some more AP classes. Duke is becoming very competitive, and AP/IB classes are definitely a point in your favor. I don't know what APs your school offers, but try to add an AP language. You might also try to add at least one AP science. APES is considered a very easy AP course/exam; I don't think you'll get credit for it at highly selective colleges. Your ECs look all right, but you could definitely add a few. Summer programs are wonderful. Since you're in NC, you have plenty of options: Duke's TIP programs (expensive), Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (free), Governor's School (free), etc. I'm sure your counselors have information about these and other summer programs.

jellybean24- There's plenty of other people from NC. Just visit us in the UNC forum! :)

Also Duke likes leadership so try to move up by senior year into a leadership position in one of your activities. If that doesn't happen start a new club at your HS in an area you are passionate in

Yeah, I plan on trying to pick up a few more ECs, continue on with my job, and stick with soccer. I'm going to be taking an AP science each of the next two years (Environmental and Bio), and I'm working on getting the PSAT scores up towards the national merit level which shouldn't be too hard since I only missed it by a few points.

I'm from Greensboro, North Carolina for whoever was asking.

I'll be taking 3 APs next year, and probably 4 (maybe 5) my senior year.

Also, does volunteer work count as ECs/help with your application? I plan on volunteering at a hospital and I volunteer at Relay for Life which is a Cancer fundraiser.
