Essay- Keeping arts in the public schools because they are essential to a well rounded education.
Supplement (summaries, not my actual responses!)
1. Why I wanted to study business and be a leader and work with a diverse group of people.
2. Wrote about how NYC is a diverse city and how I could become a global citizen.
3. I said I would bring Obama to Ellis Island to speak about immigration reform since immigrantion is good for america since they made america.

So what do you think my chances are?????????

Oh and I applied to Stern, but I heard some people do not get into Stern but CAS and I would be fine with going to CAS

Oh and I got recommendations from my 11th grade precal teacher who is amazing, my 11th grade APUSH who is also amazing, and my business teacher/FBLA sponsor who also likes me(she has me for three classes this year and one last year). Then I got the one from my counselor. Also so you know my HS course grades up tell eleventh grade were based on a 7 point grading scale so my GPA is a good bit lower than it would have been if it was all on the 10 point.

Your gpa (if you meant 3.38 out of 4, as I at first thought you did) and especially your sat are below average. ECs look decent, essay subjects look a little…safe. Doesn’t matter that your teachers are amazing, but rather that they wrote good letters saying you are. Not sure what you’re referring to with your subsequent references to grades, but unless the intangibles in your app really score points, I would think NYU is a reach, possibly a high reach. If somehow your gpa is a 3.38 out of 7 (I am not familiar with 7- or 10-point scales), then it’s a huge reach if that’s a linear grading system.

Oh, the GPA is out of 4.
By seven point I meant grading scales- (we used this through the end of my tenth grade year)
-A-93-100
-B-85-92
-C-77-84
-D-70-76
-F-69 and below
By Ten point I meant- (We began using this in eleventh grade)
-A-90-100
-B-80-89
-C-70-79
-D-60-69
-F-59 and below
But the old grades were not converted to the new scale so our grades on our transcript reflect two scales.
All the teachers that wrote recommendations love me.

Your sat will be a problem. The 25th percentile (75 percent score above it) for nyu is 1860, and obviously you’re quite a bit below that. Less than 1 percent of students had an sat category score below 500, which was just about your average. The grade thing is unfortunate, and it might be worth sending in a simple, non-apologetic statement of facts on how that worked at your school, similar to what you wrote above. But I’m afraid that those are two big strikes…good luck.

Is it possible to retake your SAT Is or take the ACT? Your current score is going to ruin your chances. I would definitely make it known about the GPA scoring change at your school, but despite that, you’re still under NYU average. Your ECs look good.

Basically, you need an extremely good hook (to hit that sweet spot where SAT scores don’t matter) or you need to retake them and have great essay/statements.

Can you break down your SAT scores (CR, Wr, M)? I have to agree with the previous posters, your chances are pretty slim based on that cumulative score and GPA, but perhaps they’re high in all the right places. And yeah, agree also that your essay topics sound a bit safe, not to mention barely if at all connected to anything in Stern, but if very well written and analytical could be advantageous… (though, I’m sorry, but I really don’t understand the premise of the Obama/Ellis island supplemental). Also, what was your courseload/weighted GPA? That’s another thing that might work in your favor. But your school clubs/leadership stuff look wayy stronger than mine were, though I got accepted to Gallatin so that’s a different ballpark. & amazing recs from amazing teachers will definitely boost your chances :)– I still think the one my sophomore history teacher wrote, who I still drop by sometimes during his free periods to talk about life with, was half the reason I got in.

Hard to see how any particular sat breakdown would help at all, sixela. If he managed a 700 in math, which would be useful, he’d therefore be at around 400 for the other 2…which would be a fatal blow. Best bet on a cumulative 1540 would be essentially 510-510-520…but that’s all but certainly a fatal blow too. It’s all but unheard of for people to get in with even ONE 500. Three would be devastating.

Math: 470(I know horrible!)(I did Pre-Cal last year I got a D+ first semester and B second Semester, this year I am in Advanced Functions and modeling which is basically Algebra Three)
Writing: 530 (on the essay I got a 9/12)
Reading: 540
I could retake them if I need too, or I was thinking maybe do the three subject test???
Oh and for the last supplement question I did Obama and Ellis Island since all my grandparents had immigrated from Ireland and Spain. And I am a strong supporter of keeping America’s boarders open. I am a very political person, I believe my history teacher who wrote the recommendation letter wrote about that since in class she and I used to talk about politics all the time. Does NYU use URM because I put I was Hispanic(Spain) and White.

Oh and for the second question I wrote about how NYC was the worlds capital and a melting pot and about how I could become a global citizen and diversity.

If anybody wants to read my supplements you can direct message me for them, I just do not like putting my writings online.

All of my writings were perfect, on the supplements I spent four hours perfecting everything and on the two common app ones I spent 2 hours on the first question and 9 hours on the long essay. Like my friends read them and they were shocked how good they were way way better than my normal writings.

Oh and I calculated my GPA out if it was all on the scale we currently use and it goes up to about a 3.5.
My classes this year are
-Conceptual Physics
-AP Lang and Comp
-Advanced Accounting
-Advanced Functions and Modeling
-AP US GOV
-Computer Information Systems
-Business Law/Management

Oh and I do not know if it matters but I am not applying for FAFSA or any financial aid.

We all wish you well, but the reality is that it’s the longest of long shots. Your SATs are just going to be too much to overcome, I’m afraid. Happy to take a look at your essays, but they just aren’t going to be able to make up the difference, no matter how good they might be, I’m virtually certain. If you’d like to send them to me, though, you’re welcome to do so. Essays are my strong suit.
