Chance of getting into TAMU

I am a Texas resident and currently in my junior year of high school.
I really want to apply for TAMU CSE on the fall of 2018. For right now, I have a 3.84 GPA with a rank of 30% in my school, and my school is very competitive with a large class size.
My sat score is 1290 with 550 on reading and 740 on math. I take a lot of AP classes(8 when I graduate). I am also in varsity football for 2 years. So what’s my chance of getting into TAMU in 2018 fall?

Pls help

A 3.84 GPA only puts you at 30%? Oy vey.

Yes. It is crazy right?

Ohh wait. I am in 40%, 555 out of 1380…

Anyone ?

Not sure what you want to hear. Look at their Common Data Set and see where you fall.

you would be a non auto admit. With the competitive entrance to engineering majors it would probably be a stretch given your rank and test scores from our experiences

@Jlol123 What is your math readiness for engineering at A&M? What Physics and Maths have you had/will you take as a senior? The competitiveness of your high school is not taken into consideration nor is GPA is even considered in the process.

A&M will look at your class rank and test (SAT, ACT) score and determine a projected GPA at TAMU. They use algorithms to combine a student’s rank and test scores and it produces 2.9, 3.0, 3.1, so on and so forth. Once they see what a student’s projected GPA is, they begin weighing all the other components of the application.
The rank and test scores are viewed together and they make up around 50% of the decision. The essays, personal achievement, etc. make up the other 50%.

While you won’t be able to reach academic admit status, I would seriously do some prep classes and retake the SAT and also the ACT. Better scores may help your application file, if you have the course rigor to back it up.

Review admits do make it into engineering at A&M and what it boils down to is your readiness to hit the ground running in the program. Engineering on the college level will require more time and than you ever had to put forth in high school. And then some. Review admits are almost impossible to predict because we do not have access to your whole file but based on your rank and SAT, I would predict a reach.

Be sure to apply to other Texas colleges with engineering programs, especially where you are a direct admit into the major like UT Dallas and UT Arlington. Give yourself lots of options and safeties, as far as acceptances and affordability.

Good Luck!

@Jlol123

Honestly, I don’t think your chances are very good (I am also hoping to get into TAMU in fall of 2018). However, many people on the tamu cc forum have told me my chances are very low. I am just going to do a stats compare.

GPA(Weighted)

(first 5 semesters, I assume same for you)
Me-3.89
You-3.84

We have comparatively the same GPA, however, I am expecting an increase between 3.92-3.95 after this semester, don’t know about you.

Class Rank
Me-20.8% (285/1364)
You-40.2% (555/1380)

This is where you are hurting really badly, I am in the top quarter and qualify for academic admit, while you have to rely on review admit.

SAT
Me-1380 (690/690)
You-1290 (550/740)

Your SAT is also a bit lackluster. I am currently working on my SAT score (so I can hopefully get national merit finalist instead of semi-finalist, since I got 1460 on PSAT). Because you got a 1290, I assume your PSAT wasn’t too high.

AP Classes
This doesn’t have a lot of weight, but it does show a rigorous schedule.

Me-14 AP Classes (Euro History, Art History, US History, Computer Science A, Psychology, Comparative Government, English Language, English Literature, Calculus AB, Physics C, Environmental Science, Government, Macroeconomic, Microeconomics)

You-8 AP Classes (Unknown Subjects)

Extracirriculurs
Me-Taekwondo 5 years (plus about 30 hours of volunteering), President of a volunteering association (~200 Hours), NHS, President’s Volunteer Service Award, Teen Court, etc. etc.

You-2 Years Varsity Football (You probably have many other extracurriculars that you didn’t put down).

Just gauging from the overall, numbers, I would say your chances aren’t great. People have been telling me on college confidential that my chances of getting in aren’t too good. This could be just the elitists on College Confidential, but I like to be safe (I know that I qualify for academic admission b/c of my rank and SAT, but I am worried about my major).

My recommendation is that you should just work on the SAT. It’s pretty much too late to improve upon your GPA since TAMU only looks at the first 6 semesters (3 years). Since I assume you are a junior (entering college fall 2018), this will be your last semester that counts for gpa/rank. Getting extracurriculars is also a tad bit too late.

Either way, good luck and hopefully you get in

@RMNiMiTz In another thread, you mentioned you had several years of PLTW classes. This will help you for engineering. Also, see about skipping Cal AB and go strait into Cal BC senior year. BC is a lot more important on your application than AB. If you don’t understand something in BC, you can learn it on youtube, seriously. I know many kids who went this route and were able to go back on their own and learn what they needed to for BC. I think that will increase your chances and your readiness for it.

After a year of engineering calculus, and having A’s all semester, it is as the last semester exam and final that are a killer if you are not prepared. Skipping AB didn’t set my son back at all.

Good Luck
