Hey all, first of all some background info... I am a 16 year old senior who attends a charter high school in CA. There I have taken most of my high school (and higher) math and science. I want to attend Berkeley's School of Engineering under the major Bioengineering.

[Will receive on the 23rd]

Will the fact that I have no conventional AP classes and a low SAT II Math score hurt me? Or should my college classes offset this? I could retake my Math SAT II since I can easily score higher with added effort, but with my current courseload it would be miserable for me...

Anyone? I'm just looking for a few brief opinions. Thanks!

I think you would lose points in the strength of schedule area, but you are a young senior and I believe your college classes do help cancel that out. And yes you could retake your SAT2 or your SAT1 depending on how you do (im not sure how it is for your school, but for ours 1800-2100 is a good range for average students).

If your essay is also really good, I think you have a pretty high chance of Berkeley/UCLA.

Math 2C scores are really low, but I come form a school where an 800 on that test is the norm, so I'm not sure if I can tell you for sure.

That you're young can help you, but your extracurriculars is quite lacking. I think you can probably make it though. Honestly speaking, UCB is not that hard to get into. 2000 Sat scores and 780 Sat 2s, with one or two extricurriculars and you should be fine.

I'd imagine my college-level calculus would trump the SAT II score, but I suppose I'll have to see. To be honest though, as someone enrolled in Calc. III and dealing with multi-variable functions (such as 3-space z=f(x,y) 4-space w=g(x,y,z)) and such I feel that the math on the SAT II is extremely trivial and rarely applied... I should have close to 800 (if not 800) on my SAT I Math so maybe that will sway their considerations. shrug

Two things I forgot to add to my list of EC:
-Peer tutoring
-"Tree People" volunteering (enviro. related)
