chance of getting scholarships

hey every one.
i want to apply for electrical engineering (BS) fall 2018, (next year i mean)
i’m international student, now i’m 19 years old and i have diploma.
i’ve done many work and many projects in electronic field (particularly robotics).
recently i made a light follower robot,
i will get TOEFL IBT over 100 score soon,
and i will take part in SAT exam (in September) and do my best to get high score.
about my family background : (if it’s important)
my father have been in the united state for 10 years
he has BS degree in electrical engineering (stony brook university)
and has ms degree in management (NYU).
my parents can support me 5-7k $ each year.
and for the first year i have about 20k $.
what’s your idea about my chance to get more than 60k $ scholarships in stanford university ?
if i apply for another university do i have any chance ?

for example due my father is NYU alumni, and my resume if i apply to NYU, can i get that much ?
thanks every one alot!

I’ve read here on cc that international students can get full tuition from U Alabama.

I consider this university,
How about another universities with top ranking ?
stanfor , mit , harvard and …
I’ve heard that if i accept in one of these top universities i can get huge scholarships.
My friend is international student too, stanford has accepted him with 67k $ scholarships (undergraduate school).

Mohammed. Getting into those schools is like winning the lottery. People do win the lottery but it will depend on your test scores PLUS with some luck threwn in. What state are you living in?

What is your family annual income? Stanford and the ivies give need based aid only.

But only to the 5 % or so of accepted students.

@nw2this full tuition at Alabama is going to take higher stats than this student has plus I’m not sure they take SAT scores taken after HS graduation.

You will. It get enough money at NYU. You must also renter as an international student, your ability to pay will be a factor in admissions. If they determine your need to be $60k you may have an uphill battle getting admitted

While your parents may only want to pay 5-7k as an international student you will. It be eligible for federal or state aid. Do you have DACA?

Are you still living in NY? If you are living in NYC then the affordable option is applying to and attending City College which has a great stem program. If stony brook is in commuting distance, you should toss an application there.

Thank you all,
I’m not living in NYC,
I haven’t visited united state yet! Only my father was in USA about 38 years ago. (he graduated of nyu in 1979)
So i don’t think i can apply for any federal aid or any state aid or loans.
As i told you, for the freshman year i can pay about 20k $
And for 3 next years my parents can pay about 7k $ each year.
So in this case what is my best choice (between many colleges in the united state) to be admitted ?

Where do you live? Your best choice is to find a low cost undergrad college in YOUR country.

I seriously doubt you are going to find a college here for $20,000 your first year…and $7000 for each subsequent year.

Not going to happen.

And your dad’s NYU status doesn’t mean anything in terms of you getting aid.

Well, i am going to college right now in my country,
Next month i will finish my freshman year,
But due to my opinion i want to leave my college here and travel to the USA by F-1 visa and restart my BS program in the USA again.
I don’t want to transfer my credits as well.
Some of my closes friends (one of them applied for Stanford BS program and got 67k $ for each year) highly recommended me to Apply next year

and try my chances,

And if i won’t admit in any colleges in the USA, that’s won’t be a problem! i can finish my BS education in my country and apply for MS or PHD program in the future (which includes TA or RA funds).
So i need a list of good colleges that are closes to my options.
I heard that NYU undergraduate scholarships is very low,
And i noticed that getting into Stanford or any top universities is very hard (but i do my best),
I accustomed in university of Alabama here.
any other advises for me ?

Well…if you are completing your freshman year of college NOW, you will,be applying as a transfer student.

Transfer students get FAR less aid in general than first year students…and YES…you are required to provide your transcript from your first college.

Some colleges don’t give transfer students aid…at all. NYU! For example, gives NO financial aid to transfer students so unless you can pay the $72,000 a year it costs to attend…cross that one off your list.

You are. 19 year old college freshman who has NOT taken the SAT…yet. For merit aid purposes, MANY colleges require that the SAT be taken while in high school…not after completing your first year in college.

You say

That is NOT an option. When apply to colleges here…one question is…have you attended college anywhere else? You can’t say NO to that question…because it would,be dishonest to do so. So…you answer YES…and your transcript will,be required from your current college.

Oh…and if you are thinking you will just “omit” the FACT that you have completed a year of college so you can apply an incoming freshman…that would also be dishonest.

And if you get financial aid because of dishonest reporting of any kind…you are committing fraud…which is a crime. Colleges frown on dishonesty. You would, run the risk of needing to repay any aid you DID receive, you could lose your admissions spot, you could be fined.

So…before you consider submitting an application that doesn’t include your current college…think again

Good luck getting accepted to Stanford as a transfer student…the school rejects over 90% of its applicants.

You need to wait for graduate school. You won’t be able afford a good engineering school. The cost had become so high since your dad went to school here. As a college student you can’t go back and take the SAT (which we take during high school) and have that count for aid for many (all?) Colleges. They will want your college transcript. Do ask much lab work as possible so that you have completed projects for your portfolio. That is really important. Keep your GPA up. Continue to master English.

Be patient and use your resources for an MS or Doctorate in the US. Save as much as you can. One of my professors came from Jordan and went to a tiny southern college. Then moved on to UCBerkeley. Now is the Dean of Engineering at our state college.

And Stanford is need aware for admissions for international students…and has limited funds…your ability to pay WILL be considered when you apply for admission. If you don’t request aid when you apply, you cannot do so at a later date.

Get your bachelors degree in your country where it sounds like it will be affordable.

Then…work and save…and apply to grad schools here.

If you cannot proof your financial support, you cannot even get an F-1 visa.

You can’t “restart your BS program”. You’re already a college student, so you’ll be considered a transfer student.

And it will be VERY easy for the colleges to figure out. Your HS graduation date will be on your transcript…they will certainly want to know why you did in the year between HS and college. If you lie and say you didn’t GO to college in your country.

Be honest…colleges really frown on dishonesty.

Thanks all,
I don’t really want to be dishonest,
But i want to leave my college here, so if i leave my college in my country i can’t apply for transfers any more ?
Restarting BS program in USA doesn’t mean that i lie to them, i just want to leave my college here,

(for example i know a guy who got BS degree in my country in EE and he applied again for BS degree in the USA, finally he got another BS degree in computer science and now he has 2 BS degree).
And i have compelling reason for my 1 year gap (between 18 and 19 years old),
<>
In this one year i can tell them i work on some robotic projects and improve my english language,
I live in IRAN, in my country SAT exam doesn’t exist at all, because of that, i could’t take SAT exam while i was in high school.
<<if you="" cannot="" proof="" your="" financial="" support,="" even="" get="" an="" f-1="" visa.="">>
Getting F-1 visa depends on how much scholarships they will give me.
If the scholarships which they will list to my I-20 (if any colleges admit me) cover my financial needs, then i applying For F-1 process.

Yes, you can apply for a transfer. However, int’l transfers rarely get good aid.

If your friend got a bachelors in his country, and then got a bachelors here in the US, then he must have paid for that second bachelors himself.

If the US college paid for his second bachelors, then he must not have told them that he had a previous bachelors degree. Colleges here do not give FA for second bachelors.

If you don’t tell, the new college about the college you are currently attending…you are LYING. Period…plain and simple.

Certainly folks can get second bachelors degrees. BUT they can’t get need based financial aid to do so. If your friend applied HERE without telling his new college about his first bachelors degree…the HE was lying too.

Stop talking to your friends…they are giving you INACCURATE and likely INCOMPLETE information.

To get your F-1 visa…you need to demonstrate that ALL costs will be covered. It is HIGHLY unlikely you will, get a full, free ride. Anywhere.

Since you didn’t take the SAT while a HS student, you are NOT eligible for the automatic merit scholarships at University of Alabama. So cross that one off your list (it was suggested on another of your threads).

You say you have a compelling reason for taking a gap year? It sounds like you are already scheming your plan to use this instead of being honest and saying you went to college for a year.

You will be coming here from Iran. Do you realize that lying could, cause you to lose your college admission spot, aid, and therefore, you would,be asked to,leave.

Oh…and getting financial aid by lying is considered fraud…which is a crime. I’ll let you read what is happening to non-citizens who commit crimes here.

You want to come to college here…and you want to come under false pretenses…pretending you NEVER went to college before. I’m sorry, but I can’t support your dishonesty. And that is what it is.

@happymomof1 where is the place for international kids to get help?

The usual place would be the closest office of AMIDEAST or EducationUSA. The student should run a google search to find out which organization has an office in their country. If there is no office, then the student should contact the Education Officer at the closest US Consulate.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Closing thread since poster seems to want to be dishonest.
