Hello,

I'm currently a Senior at the moment, just wondering what you all think my chances of being accepted somewhere like Purdue, U of I etc. for Computer Science.
GPA: 3.56 (got all A's last semester, on track to do the same this semester)

E.C: Basketball 9,10,11,12
Football 9
Golf 10
FFA 9
Freshman Class V.P.

Advanced Cred Classes and AP:

Human Anatomy
Bio 2
Chem 2
Physics
AP Calculus
AP Computer Science

Note:Small school, these are all the advanced classes offered except Spanish 4.

Computer Related Achievements:
Built working supercomputer cluster
Learning to code
Going to get multiple certifications: Microsoft, Novell, A+ etc.
Tech Club (Again, still awaiting principals approval)
Fixing computers at my school(s) since like the 3rd grade (Dad is the technology director)
Attended the LCI (Linux Clustering Institute, primarily for SYS admins at colleges, only high school kid there)

ACT

Jobs: School Summer Maintenance Crew (Tech knowledge played a role in hiring as all computers are removed from rooms during cleaning then need to hooked back up)

Thanks in advance!

I think that you have a great shot at both, to be honest. Your scores are up to par and you have great extracurricular activities that are focused on computer science.

You can pretty much forget about CS at UIUC. Your ACT is far below their mid 50. The average admission ACT to CS was 34+. For Purdue, you are applying to their first year engineering program instead of a specific major. Your GPA and ACT are both on the low side. It should be a low reach.

Edit: For UIUC, your math score is above the 75th percentile, the English is spot on the 25th percentile. It can be a high match, low reach then. I do think you have great ECs though that show a commitment to computer science.

@IWantStanford16, for UIUC, the admission stat is depending on the major. CS in CoE is the most competitive major. Just looking at the overall admission stat would not tell you a whole lot. The admission rate to CS was in the single digit last year while the overall admission rate of Engineering was over 50%.

Ohh got it, sorry @billcsho

Thanks for the input so far

I understand my ACT scores are below the average, however I would have thought my technology related achievements would make up for that. Obviously Comp Sci is heavily math and computer related, both of which I have vast accomplishments in.

Does anyone who is in computer science have any input?

If you look through the UIUC results thread from last year, pretty much everyone who got in to CS in Engineering last year fit in to at least one of these categories:
- Was already earning money coding (working as a developer at a company or developing phone apps)
- Placed well in some national/international programming competition.
- Was URM.
- Was female.
- Had super-high test scores (you didn’t need super-high test scores if you were in categories 1-4)
Showing passion for CS in your essays seems to help too. Kids who only had high test scores but evidently bland essays bland and weren’t in categories 1-4 were denied.

The scuttlebutt is that traditionally, UIUC CoE only cared about your math & science test scores, BTW, but these days, some departments (especially CS) can afford to be more selective.

Also, one of the various CS+math/stats/astronomy/chemistry/anthropology/linguistics majors in LAS at UIUC would be easier to get in to, IMO.

BTW, if you list CS in Engineering as your first choice and put down a second choice, they may admit you in to your second major.

Purdue would be easier for you to get in to as well. I would say match.

In terms of your 1-4. I guess I could technically be an URM. While I am a white male, I do come from a rural area which has little in terms of computer education. Not sure if they count that though. The only reason they have AP Comp Sci is because I found a class available.

The CS+Math is interesting though. When I was at the LCI, I talked to Sys Admins from all over the nation and they said that Comp Sci majors are more desirable to some if you have CS+etc. I at one point thought of a CS+Math option.

I forgot this in my original post, but I am in Illinois. What other colleges in the surrounding area would I be a good match for?

Any other thoughts on the following colleges?

University of Michigan
University of Wisconson

You may get into Purdue and Wisconsin but not Michigan. I don’t know about UIUC CS.
